So...how would you explain what a sorority is?
This occured to me today. So far we have 15 girls, some will be investigated due to pledge-dodger allegations, but anyway. One of the "new" girls I had some trouble with (nothing bad that is) is how to explain what a "sorority" truely is. I mean, I don't want to give one of those lovely-dovey answers about sisterhood and love and blah blah blah (sorry, had a bad day )but the more technical aspect.
Sorry that I'm rambling but we're getting down to the wire and I only want the -real- girls in and that they -know- what they're getting into. Hopefully some of you have deciphered this post..I haven't yet.
-Kayla

First off, what is pledge doger
The idea of a Soroity is like any group, to be with differentpeople, with common interests.. Not only to play , but to work together for a common intrest.
This doesnt mean a cooky cutter mold tho! Soroity mold so to speak!

Tom: A definition of a "pledge dodger" is basically someone one that just wants the letters of a GLO, they don't care which one, but they don't want to commit/pledge to "earn" their letters from an organization.
With this deal going on now, a lot of girls who have -never- rushed are wanting to be in this sorority, mostly due to if they are a founder, they will not have to pledge.

This is basically how I explained it to my French friend: A sorority is a group of women who generally share the same ideals, which does community service and sponsors social events for its members. Sororities usually have names consisting of Greek letters, but not always. Sorority membership usually consists of three phases: pledge, during which a new member learns about the sorority; collegiate, or "active," the time between initiation and graduation; and finally alumna, which lasts from graduation all through a member's life. Members of any given sorority share the same rituals, no matter what chapter they were initiated into.
This explanation sufficed for my friend, but did I leave anything out?

Let's see... you can go to the etymology, which is "a group of people united for a common purpose." You can talk about leadership, loyalty, and mutual support. You can talk about a bond that transcends external differences.
The best definition of sorority I've ever heard was given by a father to his five-year-old son. They were walking by this big wall on campus that we were painting for Senior Sendoff, and the boy asked what a sorority was. Before I could even open my mouth, his dad said, "A sorority is a group of girls who care about each other so much that they decide to call each other sisters and promise always to be there for one another."

A sorority is when a group of girls that may have never known each other, get together to do nothing and have fun because that "nothing" means the world to them.
Its the feeling felt when you can read each others mind before even speakig a word.
A sorority to me is when I feel like I can conquer the whole world just because I have the support of my sisters.
Its not a state of mind but a way of life and I wouldnt do it any other way!

Etahannah, I did just want to hug him. He and his boy kept walking, and I was so stunned that I just stood there. I wonder whether he's Greek.

That is a wonderful definition. I told my niece a bit about Delta Gamma (and of course she is ready to join yesterday...the kid is 5) and sort of like how it's a special "club" for girls, and she was all "I wanna be a Delta Gamma". So I said, "when you're older, baby, and you're in university".
I hope she has a good rush...I would hate to have left the kid with some false / presumptuous hopes....that would make me a bad auntie.... (and if you think she'll forget, trust me, she has a memory like a steel trap! LOL)

I love these quotes too...I couldn't have said it any better. We're some lucky girls to know what the sorority experience is all about : )
