Comparing Women & Men interests

DISCLAIMER: Allow me to apologize in advance if my comments are taken in the wrong way or are deemed in appropriate. Know that If I have offended anyone it was not my intent.

Has anyone else noticed that when comparing the number of interests, there seems to be a lot more ladies interested in sororities than young men are in fraternities? At some sorority informationals a hundred young ladies and upward come out while at fraternity informationals I have heard that less than a fifty young men come out. Also at events for freshmen like "Meet the Greek" the ratio of girls to guys is around ten to one.

It also seems like the quality of membership seem to be meausured differently (not better or worse just different) when looking at who some women orgs accept as compared to men orgs. For example, 200 women or more show up at an interest meeting for XYZ perhaps 20 or less get accepted at some schools. While 40 guys show up at a male informational and around 15 guys are accepted. That makes the retention percentage for women interests as opposed to men around 10% to 40%. Just look at national figures.

Also when I see members of ABC sororities they all have gpas of 3.0 or higher, are active in this or that, and president of this or that. They run my campus. When I talk to my best friend or other friends who go to other universities they speak of the ladies of such and such accepting only the "best."

Its a little different (again not good or bad just different) of XYZ fraternities on my campus. They have great events, throw great parties or so I have heard . Their gpas are never really touched on (they could be very high, although ABC group often wins highest gpa). They are active on campus but not to the extent of ABC groups.

I guess one question I'm trying to pose is: Is the pressure and measuring stick as far as requiring higher gpas and overall campus and community participation just a little different for women interests (because there seem to be more interested women) as compared to men.

Again merciful moderators don't hurt me because I have wanted to ask this question for a while.

I don't think we have had a question like this posed before.

I can tell you that you must remember that the numbers of AA woman seeking higher education almost triples that of AA males. Therefore, it would not serve as a surprise that more females are seeking membership in ANY organization or role while at a institution of higher learning.

Unfortunately, MOST of our AA males are not attending college. (This has been discussed in the Omega forum)

Men vs. Women Discrepancies...

Men have different ideas regarding comeraderie than women. Or may be we are socialized to think that way...

Women may go to informationals or Rushes to see who, what, where, when and why rather than the "real" reason why they should be there... Back in the day, when it was legal, one was invited to go to Rush. So no flakers attended Rush. Now some are just plain not told to go by outsiders...

A man's view on things are different. Some bruhs just ain't in to it. There are less African American men attending college who are D5 material... Then, you know men, if they can barely remember their girl's birthday, how are they gonna remember a fraternity's "smoker" or whatever they call it now??? The boys just plain forget if you don't staple it to their heads...

So, I guess that's why you see a discrepancy...
