Renter's Insurance

So, I'm moving into my very first apartment next month. It would actually be cheaper for me to get insurance by myself than adding a rider to my parents' homeowners policy because of the whole hurricane thing. Are there any companies that you all know of that are especially good or especially bad? I'm only familiar with Allstate and State Farm.

My girlfriend and I are going through a local company, and we got a really good deal for a lot of insurance. I'd say just call around in your area - I have a lot of relatives who work in insurance, and they say the best way to get a good price is to get a bunch of quotes from different insurance companies.

We use AMICA for renter's ins.

My car insurance was AMICA when my car was stolen almost a year ago (I was still on my Dad's car insurance) and they were wonderful for that.

I have not had to make a renter's claim on anything though. I would assume it would be a similar experience.

I'm moving to Manhattan. This is my last summer in Providence, sniff sniff.

I think I'm just going to go with Allstate. They've been really good to us as far as car and house are concerned.

We've used Prudential for a lot of stuff, but actually I think any major company will be just fine.

I used Farmer's for my renter's insurance and it cost me like a little over $100.00. Then when I ended up moving out my agent was kind enough to cut me a check for the unused months of coverage! The only thing you'll want to do is get all-risk insurance (a rider) for jewelry....and that's something you could get at jewelersmutual.com.

Ooh, $100 sounds good...Allstate was asking $284, which, since I know nothing about renters' insurance, sounded good to me.

I don't have that much jewelry besides my pin, pearl and diamond studs, and a string of pearls. Would I still need a rider?

We used Allstate. When I got my engagement ring, I also got a rider for the jewelery
