This is normal. Not to sound harsh, but sometimes your neighbor down the street who was a BBB might write a rec for you which is super, but she probably doesn't know you as well as the people you went to high school with or people you interacted with on a regular basis. Afterall, you will be in a sorority of people your age, not the neighbor down the street. She might think you are a total sweetheart, but people who are your age might know what exactly you do on a friday or saturday night - if that makes any sense.
It's really not as scarey as it might seem, if you are a good girl it works to your advantage actually. During the however many days of recruitment, we just get to know you through small talk. It's hard to get to know a person past that, so if we can get a little information on what a girl is like on a day to day basis it helps us put the peices together better.
When I call about a girl I usually ask:
Is she the type of person to get very involved?
Does she get along well with other people?
Would she ever hook up with her friend's boyfriend?
Is she a party girl? Party too much?
Is she friendly?
...Just questions like that. Luckily, everyone who I have asked about this summer I have heard nothing but positive things about. I don't know what other girls do, but I try to call more than just one person. I also like to get in touch with a "variety" of people (as far as cliques in highschool go).
Anyways, as long as you are a good girl and haven't royally personally hurt someone, I wouldn't worry. Like I said before, if the person finds out that you are a great respectable girl willing to be very involved, that will just give you an upperhand before walking through the door.
Oh and PS - Last semester I was in a sister's room talking to her and in the corner of her bookshelf I see a year book from my highschool. It was odd because she isn't even from the same state as I am. I asked her why she had it and she said during recruitment, she found someone at USM who graduated from Brandon to give her their yearbook so they could get a picture of me. I was totally freaked out by that.
And like the poster above me said, another girl's boyfriend graduated from my highschool a few years ahead of me. She asked him about me and he told her he really didn't know me but knew that I wasn't one of the bad girls in my grad. And well - even after them seeing my awful 10th grade yearbook picture, they still gave me a bid. Now that's love! hahahhaa
