Question sorority stalkers!!!

my sister just called me with some baffling, but not totally shocking, news. she and her husband both graduated from LSU, she did the previous Spring and he just graduated recently. they live in houston, and i in baton rouge. she nor her husband were greek.

this is going to sound confusing, but here goes: my sister(A) says that her husband(B) said that his friend(C) needs my sister(A) to call him(C) because someone he knows(D) from an XYZ wants to ask questions about me before recruitment. i don't think C is greek, but maybe he has a sister? i don't know, i'm confused!

i almost feel like i'm being tracked down!
i've heard people say that actives will "watch" the PNMs before recruitment, but this is still a little awkward and seems pretty unfair.

This sounds like something that might occur if someone (D in this case) was trying to complete a rec for you and they were trying to get infomation about you from someone who knows you.

Ditto to this - go ahead and meet with them, what do you have to lose?

This is NOT an unusual process. Don't be worried (unless you have a past/personality to worry about). It's a common practice in many of the larger systems that if no active knows you or of you personally, for actives to try to track down someone who does (through friends, family, co-workers, etc.) and to get to know a bit more about you. During chapter discussion, often it will be something like Q: "Does anyone know Rhonda Rushee?" A: "Oh, she's from Greekville? My brother's girlfriend went to high school there while Rhonda was there I'll give her a call..." It's just another opportunity for those who know you well to let the chapter know what a wonderful person you are!

AS USUAL...there was a thread on this!!!

This happens...it DID happen. Yes one reason is like they said, to help complete a form and get some info.

The other thing that HAPPENED, SOME sororities would contact GUYS from the town they knew the girl was from. They would get information about her and of course...an opinion.

If either of these things are happening, it can be perceived as "interest", wanting to find out a little more. Now, all those hometown girls better hope the guys say nice things!

Of COURSE, they contact other girls too, but the fact they ask the guys kind of blew my mind when I saw it happening.

Ya know, last night, I met a guy who just graduated from LSU who was in a frat. He was telling me about how the sororities would ask his opinion on girls he knew from home. I didn't believe him because it sounded so crazy to me, like some sort of covert CIA mission! Haha- I guess he WAS telling the truth

This is how sororities deal with girls for whom they can not find recs. If they can find out about you and get an opinion from someone they trust, the recruitment advisor will grant you the alum rec. It is a technicality for a lot of sororities that you can not receive a bid without a rec.

So anyway, this is good.

This is normal. Not to sound harsh, but sometimes your neighbor down the street who was a BBB might write a rec for you which is super, but she probably doesn't know you as well as the people you went to high school with or people you interacted with on a regular basis. Afterall, you will be in a sorority of people your age, not the neighbor down the street. She might think you are a total sweetheart, but people who are your age might know what exactly you do on a friday or saturday night - if that makes any sense.

It's really not as scarey as it might seem, if you are a good girl it works to your advantage actually. During the however many days of recruitment, we just get to know you through small talk. It's hard to get to know a person past that, so if we can get a little information on what a girl is like on a day to day basis it helps us put the peices together better.

When I call about a girl I usually ask:

Is she the type of person to get very involved?
Does she get along well with other people?
Would she ever hook up with her friend's boyfriend?
Is she a party girl? Party too much?
Is she friendly?

...Just questions like that. Luckily, everyone who I have asked about this summer I have heard nothing but positive things about. I don't know what other girls do, but I try to call more than just one person. I also like to get in touch with a "variety" of people (as far as cliques in highschool go).

Anyways, as long as you are a good girl and haven't royally personally hurt someone, I wouldn't worry. Like I said before, if the person finds out that you are a great respectable girl willing to be very involved, that will just give you an upperhand before walking through the door.

Oh and PS - Last semester I was in a sister's room talking to her and in the corner of her bookshelf I see a year book from my highschool. It was odd because she isn't even from the same state as I am. I asked her why she had it and she said during recruitment, she found someone at USM who graduated from Brandon to give her their yearbook so they could get a picture of me. I was totally freaked out by that.

And like the poster above me said, another girl's boyfriend graduated from my highschool a few years ahead of me. She asked him about me and he told her he really didn't know me but knew that I wasn't one of the bad girls in my grad. And well - even after them seeing my awful 10th grade yearbook picture, they still gave me a bid. Now that's love! hahahhaa
