Get Ready Unplugged: Sick and tired of being sick and tired

I can bash the SWAC because I love the SWAC. Anything said as criticism derives from the hope that somebody in power, with a level head and a little foresight, will make the necessary changes needed to make the SWAC a better conference. My Grandmomma use to say, "This is going to hurt me more than it does you." That’s one of the biggest lies ever told, because it sure looked like she was having a lot of fun to me...but I digress.

Shouldn’t we be tired of the status quo? Who will stop the buffoonery? Isn’t it time-out for the excuse, "that’s just the way it is in the SWAC?" Is there one coach or administrator who can set the standard so high that it forces the rest of the SWAC to catch up? Wouldn’t that improve standards across the board? Will there be one? Will the SWAC ever find its Steve Spurrier; a coach who was so good that he changed the complexion of football in the SEC? Am I the only one tired of the same old SWAC? It’s time for some quality.

I am not a coach, but I play one on the Internet. Sometimes I just shake my head while watching a SWAC football game. Can we ever get coaches that teach and demand basic fundamentals from the players to make the same demands of their own game management skills? Have you ever been embarrassed while watching a SWAC game? You turn and ask the person next to you, “Why did they do that?” Most coaches complain about lack of funds, but how much money does it take to know when to call a timeout? How much money does it take to study film of the team you are about to play? How much money does it take to practice clock management? How much money does it take to have a little class on and off the field? How much money does it take to institute basic fundamentals?

The people in the SWAC office in Birmingham are not any better; in fact, they are even worse. It has been said that if you want to find out what is wrong with an organization, start at the top. For the past 5 years, the SWAC office has been directing the biggest farce in athletics since the 1929 Chicago White Sox. The conference managed to hire a commissioner who convinced some of us that a championship game would work and the winner of that game would get to play in the Heritage Bowl. We would also move this magical game to Birmingham where the city is offering us a free ride. Well we played the first game in 1999, according to that commissioner, the SWAC didn’t make “a dime” in that game even though 47,000 people attended. I wonder where all of that money went? What has been the outcome of this brainstorm idea? The Heritage Bowl, our HBCU championship game, was cancelled after the 1999 season. Subsequently, the SWAC championship game has also suffered from declining attendance since its inception. I have to end this paragraph with a question, “Did anyone think?”

Wait, I’m not finished. The new SWAC office regime is trying to institute a new football plan that requires all SWAC teams to play each other. So now, we are trying to play everybody in the SWAC and still have a SWAC Championship game. “Why play a championship game if each team plays the other? Wouldn’t the SWAC championship be decided during the regular season?” That’s what logical people would ask. If we don’t hire good generals, the troops will suffer. This is undeniable proof that crap really does roll downhill.

And when are we going to hire decent referees? (OK stand back, War and Peace step aside.) The level of asinine buffoonery called SWAC officiating is getting worse every year. You would think that someone watching would get tired of seeing this. SWAC officials systematically take away from the enjoyment of the game. It is the most idiotic, foolhardy, stupid, highest level of buffoonery in officiating today. Somebody, somewhere that knows something about officiating should do whatever it takes to improve the officiating crews we throw on the field. High school sports have better officiating. But, I’m sure this is a money issue too.

SWAC officials cost several teams games by missing and making several inexcusably bad calls. Yet, they go on from game to game usually without punishment. Here are just some examples from the 2002 season alone:

- Missing back-to-back 12 men on the field calls in the Southern vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff game.
- Missing a wide-open touchdown catch by a Southern University receiver in the Circle City Classic vs. Alabama A&M.
- Making a piss poor call in the SWAC championship game when a player was EJECTED for hitting a wide receiver while the ball was still in play.

This mess is ridiculous and constantly deteriorating. Don’t SWAC officials remind you of your drunk uncle? It’s embarrassing.

With all of this being said, the SWAC is still the best conference for me. This is still the conference that has all other 1-AA conferences on the outside looking in trying to figure out the secret to our success. Sometimes it seems we are missing out on an opportunity to maximize our potential. That will continue to happen until we all find better LEADERSHIP.
