Philanthropy Ideas!
Hi Girls! Does anyone have any cute Philanthropy Events??? Our chapter has already done "I Spy an A De Pi" but our school permits us from using the water guns and we can't do "King of the Jungle" because the Delta Zeta's at our school do "Big Man on Campus" which is basically the same thing. So...I need ideas!!! Thanks for all your help!!
Pi love from SMSU,
Ash

Hi Ash!
Here are some ideas. Heads-up to all ADPi's: I Spy An ADPi is no longer condoned by Grand Council, due to its negative connotations to terrorism. I know, eye-roll, groan. BUT.... Let's move past our disappointment and come up with something BETTER that really promotes ADPi and RMH is a POSITIVE light!
1) UCF in the past has had 2 really succesful events Flaggin Down the Fun (a co-ed all campus flag football tournament with community sponsors and local media, concurrent with a raffle) and ADPi 8-Ball (a pool tournament for the fraternities)
2) UCLA has done a "Rock A Thon" where sisters sign up for times to be rocking in rocking chairs for RMH, and get sponsors; as well as a penny war (silver coins are bonus points, pennies are negative points.) They have also done an "ADPicnic" where all of the other Greek chapters donate their live-in's dinner money for the night (ab't $5/head) and the girls serve food donated by community patrons, there is also a DJ.
3) You can do your King of the Jungle! Guys love showing off. My university had several such events and we always had great turnout. The trick is to time your events so they don't fall in the same quarter/semester.
4) How about a "Shakedown"-- a dance competition/skit with fraternity and sorority groups entered. "Lip Service" A lipsyncing/skit contest--- another ADPi chapter does an event like MTV's ICON where the chapters are given the name of an artisit (like Janet Jackson) and have to perform a skit and songs Or a Moon bounce--- you raise money with community sponsors (like in a 5K), rent a moonbounce, and have sisters signed up for shifts to bounce in the moonbounce for 48 hours. You can set it up by your student union, have music, food, etc., and attract attention. Another chapter does a Mocktail Competition-- the groups enter and have to create some kind of edible, tasty and creative nonalcoholic drink-- you can have an entry fee, sell shirts/aprons, and sell the recipes in a booket.
5) Get together with your local alumnae association and plan an event together! You can qualify for some great ADPi awards in doing this pairing and you are sharing the work with mature women in the community who might be able to help get big bucks in as community sponsors. Memphis <?> just did a golf tournament that was amazingly successful and both the chapter and association were given an award at convention for it
6) Pair up with a fraternity and have your event sponsor both your organizations-- you will get your sisters out by the drove!
REMEMBER NO MATTER WHAT EVENT YOU CHOOSE, MAKE SURE ALL THE MONEY IS DONATED DIRECTLY TO ADPI FOUNDATION SO YOU GET CREDIT IN YOUR CHAPTER REPORT!!! THE FOUNDATION WILL DONATE THE MONEY TO YOUR CHARITY-- WHETHER IT IS RMH INTERNATIONAL, YOUR LOCAL RMH, ANOTHER GLO'S PHILANTHROPY, ETC.
Good luck!

With the 8-ball tournament...we aren't allowed to do any philanthropy events in places that serve alcoholic beverages so we can't do it at a pool hall...got any ideas on how we could get around that???

A mock-tail blend off sounds like fun!
I'm not too sure if our rules would allow it though?

We are putting a new spin on the I Spy game. Instead of using waterguns, we are passing out bracelets to the guys and they have to actually come up and talk to us, give us their bracelet and sign our t-shirts. If you guys know how SX's Derby Days works, it is along the same lines. That's just one of the events we have planned.

I Spy an ADPi doesn't have to be gotten rid of altogether, just altered to get rid of its negative connotations. The way we do it is that we label a hundred hawaiian lei's for for each frat on campus with little pieces of paper. The guys hand out the leis to all of the bros and then whenever they see a girl in her shirt, they give her a lei.
We use that as part of a spirit activity leading up to our main philanthropy event. Some other things we do are a "Singled Out" style game for all the guys (we play three times and then the three girls and all the winners go out on a group date)
We also do a toy drive at Christmas time with Sigma Chi and then have a really fun "gift wrapping party" that turns into an exchange basically.
Our main activity though is a huge soccer tournament between all the fraternities. The guys get really competitive and love it. We give the winning teams t-shirts. We charge the guys an entrance fee to play. Last year we raised over 6000 dollars.
Some other sororities at USC do these philanthropies: fashion show, a basketball tournament (Alpha Phi), Pool Tournament (Tri-Delt), Bowling Tournament (Gamma Phi Beta), Flag Football (Alpha Chi Omega), Putt-Putt Golf TOurnament on the row (Kappa), Water related activities, best eyes on the row(you put money in the jar for who you want to win) (delta gamma), pie-eating contest (pi-phi), volleyball tournament (theta).
Some frats do some things that could probably be used too: Casino night (theta xi), date/firemen auction (PIKE), Sumo Wrestiling (Phi Sig), Foxy Boxing (they rent supersize boxing gloves and an inflated ring) (ATO), sand-related activities (PiKapp), Christmas tree sales (Sigma Nu), Wheelchair Basketball (TKE), Watermellon related activities (lambda chi), flag football (SAE), Shopping Cart races (Phi Psi)
Really you can do anything, just make sure it has a good name, good advertisements, and cute t-shirts!

My chapter for the past few years has been doing Rock-N-Bowl...it is a bowling tournament...Very entertaining...and we have gotten a decent amount of entries from groups that arent in greek life, in addition to other sororities and fraternities.
As for getting around the serving alcohol, some places dont serve it at all hours...also some places will serve it in a section that is limited for those underage to enter, in turn making it seperate from the event...Another option is the fact that atleast on my campus, some res halls have pool tables, so you could set up a tournament at a place like that....

I think I've heard of one sorority on my campus who does a jump-a-thon of sorts with a fraternity.
Basically they jump on a trampoline (taking turns of course -- don't want anyone to get exhausted, esp. in the hot Texas sun!) for several, *SEVERAL* hours on end and get donations. I think it sounds fun.. you get exercise *and* help raise money for great causes

We do a Teeter totter-athon with the Pikes, and we teeter totter non-stop for 3 days....not much fun in the rain!
Also, during King of the Jungle week, a really good event that we did this year was a nintendo tournament between the fraternities....(boys and their nintendo games! )
Other philanthropy events that others have done are paintball tournaments, "brownies and backrubs", pike fight nite...sorority vs. sorority...frat vs. frat (my favorite), date auctioning, and others.

Okay, back when I was an alpha my chapter did the cutest philanthropy, it was called "legendary legs" contest.
What we did was got frat guys to allow us to take pictures of their legs. We then put a table on our mall and had the pictures taped to like a box to put money in.
Whichever man had the higest amount of points won a roundtrip airfare ticket. (I don't know how my chapter came up with this prize, since I was only an alpha when this took place I didn't ask). But it had to be a good prize for the men to be willing to show their legs off on a campus of 30,000+.
Anyways, to figure out 'points', I believe it was that coins gave you negative points and bills gave you positive points. All the money went to RMH.
Obviously this could be changed around to fit your schools needs. I actually had a blast helping out with this contest. It was quite humerous watching people dink some guys because they didn't have nice legs but raise the points of others by putting bills in. We had both guys and girls participate in voting. It was fun. I think a Sigma Chi actually won the contest.
