It's not a rule, but I try to avoid wearing black during the summer because it is so hot.

The only rule that I have heard is not to wear velvet after Valentine's Day.

I think black is fine year-round, but like Cream said, it can get hot if you're outside for a while!

I think the "No white after Labor Day" rule applies to more dressy fashions than casual ones, too. I don't think most people would have issues with a white tee shirt with your jeans, for example -- but if you're going to a dinner party in October, a white dress would be inappropriate (unless it's for sorority initiation or you're getting married, of course! ).

It's fine to wear black any time. I tend to wear it all year, and just about every day to work because it's so easy.

Even die hard rules like "no white after Labor Day" are really becoming more relaxed lately. I wouldn't worry about it!

Fashion Rules, according to Swissmiss

1. No velvet between Valentine's and Labor Day (if in the south, wait til the beginning of October!)
2. No white shoes, sandals, etc between Labor Day and Easter.
3. Your skirt should have more material vertically than horizontally.
4. Black is chic anytime during the year, but hot during the summer. Off set it w/ khaki or white for your own sake.
5. Do not wear summery shoes with winter clothes or vice versa.
6. If I can see your thong/panty line thru your jeans, they're tooooo tight.
7. If I can see the stretch marks on your chest, perhaps your shirt is too low cut.
8. If you are going to wear sandals, refer to the thread on the rules of feet.
9. If you have fat rolls on your stomach or back, that's perfectly cool. God made us all different sizes. Just don't let us see them. Clothes come in large sizes for a reason.
10. As a corollary, skinny girls should not wear skin-tight stuff just because they can. Especially during the day.

Black in the summer is sorta cool though. It has that Audrey Hepburn/Jackie O at Cape Cod sort of look. I have lots of black stuff that I wear, but mostly at night.

Black in the summer is perfectly fine. You might not want to wear it in the heat of the day, but if you can stand it then go for it. To my knowledge there aren't any "rules" about wearing black in the summer...of course, I guess I could call my great-grandmother and check real quick, but I think you'd be OK!

I love wearing black all year round, and if you're wearing summery fabrics like cotton or linen, you should be okay.

I have way too many little black tops in my wardrobe! So I do wear black shirts, mainly out. I just got these great form fitting teal pants and a mint green mini skirt-- they look great with my dressy black tank tops-- a great mix of color with your black clothes for the summer!

Black is the greatest color of all
I have tons of black shirts, shoes, skirts, and pants
In fact, since I'm anal, my closet is organized by color and then type
The black shirts take up the front half of the closet
I have 2 boxes of black shoes and about 15 black skirts and 5 pairs of black pants that I wear
During the summer, I wear black with a bright color or khaki
During the summer nights, I wear black dresses out

The only thing I don't wear is white(I didn't even have a dress for initiation)
When we graduated from high school, we wore black under our black and red robes
So, to own something white outside of a tank top or t-shirt. . .I just don't do it

Thanks

Thank you SO much for all the advice. I have never been a large follower of rules but when you are trying to impress a guy - infront of his crowd of friends i feel its always important to not be breaking some unspoken fashion rule.
Anyway thanks again for the advice.

And yes Justamom - if I ever again get a hickey I know to DEFINATELY wear a turtle neck (i almost typed tank top on accident :-/ )

Laura
