Post More Supreme Court Decisions

The Supreme Court has rejected a plea from Elian's Miami relatives that would keep him in the United States.

Also, in a 5-4 decision the justices upheld the Boy Scouts ban on gay troop leaders.

I just saw that! They have been breaking in the programming with scenes of Elian and his family going to the airport to leave for Cuba.

Since I am in Louisiana...the Supreme Court also ruled that public funds can be used to finance technology in nonpublic/parochial schools.

I say great for Elian... It should be time for him and his father to go home, this has all been political form the start... the boy deserves to be with his father. There are no more decisions to make...

As far as the boy scout ruling goes, I am not sure if this is a private org or if the boyscouts are funded by public money, I say if they are private they have the right to ban whomever they want from the organization, reguardless whether they are gay or not. The government has no right to interfear with the structure of an private organization, unless there is something illegal occuring...(some argue this is a issue of discrimination which I don't agree) Just think about it, if they can rule in favor for this man because of the boy acout requirements, think what the'll start doing to Greek organizations...

I thought Elian should have been able to see his Miami relatives. The news reported that Manuel (the father) wanted the relatives to see Elian, but the relatives would have to drop the appeal. They (Miami rel) refused. Now, Elian has gone back to Cuba and the Miami relatives did not get a chance to see him. Those are the breaks!

I just wanted to comment on the Supreme Court's decision to ban homosexuals from being troop leaders. In my opinion, this is a travesty. From what I understand, this decision was not made out of fear that homosexuals are more likely to be pedophiles and act inappropriatley with the young boys. This decision was made because the Boy Scouts feel that homosexuals are not good role models for impressionable young men. I just don't agree. I don't think that one's sexual preference has anything to do with one's ability to mold a child into an upright, law-abiding citizen. What about the heterosexual troop leader who goes home and beats his wife? Or the one who snorts a vial of cocaine before the camping trip? Or what about the one who is laundering money from his place of employment? Are these men better suited to act as role models just because they choose to have sex with women? I think not.

I do not condone homosexuality, but when the highest law of the land sides with such a discriminatory practice, I get nervous. As black people, we know discrimination first hand, and this just makes me wonder where it will end. Who are they to deem who is fit to serve as a role model? When they start demeaning their own, I think we need to keep our eyes and ears open and not sleep on what it means to NOT be a white, heterosexual male in this country.

SkeeBunny,

All I can say to that is, "WHOA". I agree with you whole-heartedly. I am not condoning homosexuality either, however, prejudice for whatever reason, is wrong.

As far as Elian goes, I just hope his father did the things he did, for the RIGHT reasons. May GOD be with them.

When I first heard of the decision concerning the scouts, the first thing that popped into my mind was "Who's next?". I mean if the organization can discriminate against gays, and the SUPREME court says it is alright, who else can they discriminate against? I think this decision can do nothing but hurt all miniorities, not just homosexuals You never know, the scouts might feel that African Americans aren't "good role models"...
