US v. Paraguay Soccer Match

I know that there's some other soccer fans lurking about the GreekChat forums. So - was anyone else there? Well, other than USChica06 and me!

I thought this thread had something to do with politics at first, too!

I like soccer, but mostly I just support Liverpool.

Haha I saw the game, had just gotten back from Chicago too.

Landon and Ernie both scored sweet goals. Sucks they did bad in te COnfed cup. I dont think Bruce is developing the younger players well enough aside from Beasley, Donovan and Mathis. BocaNerga and Califf have a little work to do before WC qualifying.

Anyone see those clips of Freddy Adu? DAMN that kid is good. He's 13 and smoking 18 yr olds.

I was in Columbus all weekend with Mr. honeychile & a lot of our internet soccer friends (www.bigsoccer.com). We saw the Columbus Crew tie the hated Dallas Burn on Saturday, then the US Men's National Team beat Paraguay 2-0 yesterday. It was something like 101° on the field, but more like 94-95° in the stands.

We tailgated, then sat with Sam's Army, a first for me. It was an experience I'll not soon forget!

I was slathering SPF #30 on every 10 minutes religiously, and was still pretty burned. I guess that's why everyone wears red - so you can't tell how badly you're burning!

Just wanted to see if anyone else was there!

Confederation's Cup is a joke is my opinion. No need for it, means nothing, etc. Just a tournament that takes away MLS players form theyre clubs for up to 3 weeks.

I don't expect Califf to be on the WC roster. I think Bruce Almighty is working to find the central defense and discovered that Califf is no replacement for Bocanegra.

Mathis needs to tune up his finishing. The shots were there, just slightly off target. DMB is my boy with the bling. Gotta love him.

And Adu, that's all I can say. Adu.

The whole weekend was awesome. I met honey thru BigSoccer, and she got me into this (blame her )

The Dallas/Columbus game was rather dull. But when you're a Fire fan and appear in such clothes, and get wth other Fire fans and cheer when the announcer screen says that the player of the week is your foward Ante Razov it gets wild.

Sam's Army was great. I learned a valuable lesson. NEVER STAND NEAR THE CONFETTI BAG!

I got a "She's got dandruff" chant from the fellow supporters.

Verily! Just wish the Fire had scored! Great visual - we're all in this Scottish pub after the Crew game, and roughly half of the people have their cell phones to their ear, half of them asking, "What's the score on the Fire game?!"

This had to be seen to be believed! The entire section looked like a snow drift!! As I was unpacking, confetti fell out of the strangest places...

I liked the "¡Estados Unidos!" chant a LOT!!

Nice post by the way.

I saw the game on the TV and i will chalk it up to the heat but the play was sloppy and slow. I seriously think we got showed in the ConFed that we are quite a few years away from taking a World Cup. I do like the fact that when i watch a national team game i see new faces. The new guys are the future and they are gonna be the guys that are the backbone of the team in the coming years. And for some reason i am not a big fan of Donovan, he just doesn't impress me.

My teams

England and all European play: Man Utd.
Spain: Real madrid
Italy: Inter, i loathe Juventus
MLS: Dallas

Favorite league definately a close one between the Spain's and England's

My parents are big soccer (football outside US/Canada) fans. I get into arguments with them about the name of the sport. Is it football or soccer? There were born and raised in Argentina and they call it football, I was born and raised in the US so I call it soccer. Every four years, I become a "World Cup Orphan" (the men's World Cup) since I am not much of a fan and don't really follow the sport anyway. Last year, I was amazed the US men's team made to the quarterfinals, usually the women's team excel (winning two World Cups is nothing to sneeze at).

Both. And here's why...

England developed the term "football" to describe the game. It wasn't however, contrary to popular belief, named "football" because you play it with your feet. It had something to do with the measurement of the ball, I believe, or something like that. A foot. Just how "foot" dealing with measurement gots its name. Some dude measured a King's foot and declared that a foot.

Anyway...

Rugby became popular in England as a different form of football. So, back in the day, "rugby" was called "football" along with "football (soccer)." Rugby, or later American football, was getting confused with "football." So our good ol friends across the pond invented the word "soccer." So they had "soccer" (football in England today) and "football" (rugby in England today).

After the term "rugby" was developed. It was applied to that game and "soccer" became "football" again.

But the games had already been passed through to America. Rugby developed into American Football and soccer is what it is.

And other countries say soccer as well. Australia and New Zealand. Funny, weren't those colonized by the Brits as well?

So next time some England guy yells at you for saying "soccer" tell him to blame his ancestors.

When I refer to a nation or team that uses "soccer" I say soccer. If I refer to a nation or team that uses "football" I say football. Example:

The Chicago Fire play the best soccer in all of MLS!!!! Who's the Best?

Liverpool Football Club just signed Carlos Bocanega in an attempt to gain more female supporters. It's working. Honey'll get that.
