I'm usually a silent monitor but I had to comment on something that disturbed me lastnight.
I don't know if the rest of you saw it but I was watching Dateline on NBC lastnight and it was talking about the melee that went on a few weeks ago in New York city. I was EXTREMELY appalled, saddened and disgusted by the display I saw on television; it brought me to tears. Young women, getting their clothes ripped off to be made a fool of for the whole world to see. What is up with our men???
I was watching the show with a friend of mine (who is male) and he was actually LAUGHING through the whole thing. I taped it and he was actually stopping the tape and rewinding to the parts where the women were naked! He thought it was funny and felt that all the young girls were dressed in a way in which they ASKED FOR IT. That's right, they DESERVED to be fondled, fingered and trampled just because they wore shorts and a tube top. That kind of mindset upsets me to the FULLEST. I've been to Black Beach in Daytona and Freaknic when it was in existence and it seems that a lot of men feel the same way as my friend does. When I went to those events, I was touched and I didn't even have tight clothes on! I tried to explain to him that just because I decide to walk down the street and wear some clothes that show off my figure DOES NOT give a man the right to touch me - I don't care. I don't dress in very tight clothes but if I choose to, that is my business.
My question is, WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH!!!
The men in the video were utterly DISGUSTING!! The mob even attacked a woman who was on her honeymoon walking WITH HER HUSBAND...after her husband rescued her from the mob, the men (or should I say BOYS) continued to grab and fondle her.
And what is even more saddening is that New York police DID NOTHING about it until that white woman was attacked. Police are trying to use seized videotape to prosecute the men but lawyers say even if they catch them, they STILL might not be able to prosecute because it doesn't show who did what to whom.
What are we as women supposed to do??? It seems as though the world is getting crazier and crazier everyday. It makes me not want to attend ANYTHING that would be on the same magnitude as that festival. It appears that the actions of these fools are being JUSTIFIED! Even a brotha who was being interviewed about the incident said that some women were going along with it and if he were a woman, and he saw a mob of men he would of walked around it. Easy for him to say....
I just want to know what everyone thinks about this....men saying the women ASKED to be ATTACKED??? NY Police who did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and the attacks were occuring right in front of their faces??? I am truly saddened by the whole situation and the fact that it was our men who were involved in it makes it even more sickening. And to know that there are men out there, probably like my friend, who saw nothing out of the ordinary with the display makes me wonder where are we headed to as a society where women are to be made a mockery of and treated as animals.
Sincerely,
A very sad, mad sisterfriend
