Does Your School Still Have Skits?

Hey Ladies!!

I know there has been a push to eliminate skits, especially in many northern schools. So I am just curious if anyone's school does not have them, and what they do in replace of skit night.

I'm Recruitment Chair for Panhel. We have deferred formal, so its not right around the cornor, but I need to submit proposals for October...and right now I just have too much time on my hands.

Any ideas would be great!!

Thanks!!

We don't have an official "skit day" so groups are free to decide whether they want to do a skit or not. Some still do.

The University of Alabama still has a designated skit day. We used to have two skit days. One was the first invitational round and then the other was in the second invitational round. A few years ago, they replaced the first skit day with philanthropy day. This year the schedule is:

Days 1 and 2: Ice Water Teas...everyone goes to every house. It's broken into two days because there are 15 houses to visit.

Day 3: Philanthropy Day

Day 4: Skit Day

Day 5: Serious Night (aka Pref night for all you non-Bama folks)

Day 6: Bid Day

I like skit day because it seems more fun for the PNM's, even though it is a LOT of work for the chapter and their advisors.

My campus panhellenic voted to eliminate Skit Night in favor of Philanthropy Night back in 1998. We only have three rounds of recruitment-- 30 min. Meet & Greet, 45 min. Second Round, and 60 min. Preference-- until 1998, Second Round was skits. Panhellenic felt that Skit Night really had little redeeming value and left little more superficial event for PNMs to base their decision about which sororities to pref. Because Lawrence sororities are heavy into philanthropic activity anyway, Panhel decided that a philanthropy project would be much more fitting to Lawrence's style and provide a greater opportunity for in-depth conversation.

We have no Skit day, but we do have philanthropy day. We have a very strictly enforced no frills rush: No skits, no balloons, no flowers, unless they were recieved as a gift to the chapter (this is when alums are encouraged to send tons of bouquets in coordinating colors for the day). At first I heard it was really difficult, but I think that people like it. The budgets for Rush were getting out of hand when the decision came through. The Chapters were trying to outspend each other on decorations, and PNM's started judging houses that way.

At the University of Toronto, we have open houses, where girls got to check out each house (we have 7 sororities on campus) for 2 nights (girls were made to do 7 houses in 1 night or if they had conflicts- half 1 day and half the next or all the 2nd day), then theme night, then pref. last year, theme night was changed to philanthropy night. i think this has decreased the rush budget which was also getting out of hand.
I think most chapters on campus preferred theme night b/c it's hard to come up with a meaningful philanthropic activity for nm's to do in 30 min. that somehow relates to your international philanthropy. i know that we have been looking to our American sisters for help in this aspect.
i think this year will go alot better though b/c we know what's expected and have a lot more ideas.

Wow I've never even heard of recruitment not having skit day! My school definately still does it. We do it like:

Day 1-Go Greek day, meet all 14 houses

Day 2-Skit day

Day 3-House tour/philanthropy day

Day 4-Pref

Day 5-BID DAY!!!

I love skit day, it's so fun, I hope we don't get rid of it!

We have a "skit" day but some groups do skits and the others do like a collaboration of songs. I remember my first year one group replaced a lot of things in Disney songs with their names and changed some words. Those days are invitational though, so you can't see everyone's skit/song

And I'll tell you what, you can really see who worked hard on them. One group impressed me BIG time last year because it appeared to be a 10 minute "letterman" show and it was ALL memorized and it was so funny. Everyone talked about their skit after the party, they were a big hit!

I don't know if we ever had a skit day. Our four nights of recruitment are:

Round 1: Meet all 6 groups

Round 2: Philanthropy night. We all plan our crafts for the pnm's to do and we're also allowed to create 'movies' about our groups.

Round 3: Pref

Round 4: Bid Night!

We still do skits.

Our rush schedule is pretty simple.

Round One: Skit Night

Round Two: House Tours & Philanthropy Night

Round Three: Pref Night

I wish we had four rounds of recruitment, but I suppose three works well too.

Last year we had 4 days, so our second day was Skit Day. It's not required, but both sororities have always had a lot of fun with it. However, we decided to cut Recruitment to 3 days because the PNMs were getting bored because with it being a small school, you could only ask the girls so many questions. Our Formal Recruitment is not very structured in that we can kinda choose what we want to do. Last year it was required to have a Philanthropy night but this year it's not required... we will do it anyway our second night. That will probably mean no skits, but I'm sure we'll have fun anyway.

The rush at my school isn't as formal as in a lot of other schools. We just have 3 nights where girls are broken up into groups and get to visit each rush room for 20-30 minutes. Each sorority is free whatever it wants within its rush room. After the last night of rush, the sororities hand out pref party invitations to girls. The pref parties are held over the weekend and they are each 1 and a half hours long and are more informal and they gave the rushees to talk to the sororities about whatever they want. After pref parties, the rushees rank the sororities in school in the order that they want to be in them, and the sororities have a bid list and the rho chis do bid matching

We had skits every day except for Open House, at which we would just do a song and a mini-skit, and Preference, for which we had our own ceremony. We always called the skits the "entertainment." All the houses did this, so I thought it was the norm until I went on here!

We eliminated skit day and replaced it with a philanthropy day. Now on the first day of recruitment, the pnm's meet with a few members from each sorority in our ballroom and there is one skit put together by the few members from each sorority that attend the first night. (I think we are still doing this this year) The skit is focused on Go Greek.
