Cityor Suburbs
Would you rather raise your family in the city or suburbs? I was talking to one of my brothers about it and he wants to raise his family in the sam e kinda town he grew up in. he grew up in a town with 1200 people no stoplights, no fourway stops in rural Massachusetts. I grew up in DC(which isnt the murder capital of the country anymore!) and I loved it. I would like to raise my kids in the city or a metropolitan area. What about you?

There are lots of opportunities (educational, cultural, shopping, etc) available in places like NYC or Boston that you just can't get elsewhere, and you don't need a car to get around, so the kids don't need to book Mom's Taxi to visit their friends. On the other hand, in the 'burbs you can have a real live backyard, it's quiet, and usually the crime rate is a lot lower.
I think the ideal situation is what I grew up with... living in the 'burbs, but within commuting distance of a major city, so you can go in for a day and take advantage of all the city has to offer.

aephi alum - i was thinking the exact same thing!! i grew up about 20 minutes outside of boston in a pretty big suburb that had a lot to offer. we were also close enough to boston to drive up there whenever we wanted. i think i had the best of both worlds, in a way!

I'm glad I grew up in NYC. I was given a lot of freedoms back then that, if I lived in a suburb w/o a good mass transit system, I would not have been able to experience. I feel that the city is a great place to raise kids...Gives 'em spunk!

I totally agree. You can go to the city for the excitement that it offers, and when you are done, you can go home to some peace and quiet.
This coming from someone who was born and raised in Brooklyn and still lives there.

I agree with most everyone else on here. I grew up in a small town, but we were 30 minutes away from the small city of Greensboro (but big enough to feel "city") and an hour and a half away from either Raleigh or Charlotte. I got to grow up in a country atmosphere, but there wasn't a weekend that went by where my mom didn't take us to "the big mall" or to nearby museums. It's definitely the way to go!

Where exactly did you grow up? My dad and I lived in Onslow County (sp?), the Midway Park area, for a few years. He was working at Camp LeJeune.

That's not a suburb - that's an outpost!
But my answer is suburb.

I'm from Asheboro, which is pretty much right in the center of the state.

Well, I'm a city girl - lived in the city all my life (Fort Worth and Austin). I'd like to live for at least a little while in a small town, just to see what it is like. My friends say I would die in a week!!

Neither.
Country.
I will raise my kids and live in a small town/area just a few minutes from a big town. FOr those familliar with San Antonio, I am thinking a place like Helotes or Grey Forrest. Within 10 minuts of the freeways of the city, but worlds apart. Of course withthe city encroaching, Now it might have to be Pipe Creek or soemthing, but I gotta be close to the city.

Hey there GMUBunny,
I have lived many a years in Jacksonville...
live there three years, live somewhere else three years,
live there one year, live somewhere else three years, etc....
My father is a retired Marine, from New York.
They, my parents, have now retired in Jacksonville.
It's nothing great, but it certainly has grown over
the years.
