Post Another Boycott Annouced By The NAACP

As many of you are aware, the NAACP officially began a tourism boycott of South Carolina because of the confederate flag that flies over the statehouse dome. They are now asking that we not watch the Dukes of Hazard reunion movie on CBS tonight. The reason for the boycott is because the car (the Gen. Lee) has the confederate flag on top. I'll admit growing up I did watch the Dukes of Hazard, but I never made the connection between the name of the car and the flag on top of the car back then.

Don't feel bad Soror Akatude because I wouldn't have made the connection between the car and the confederate flag until you just mentioned it. I used to really enjoy watching the show. See, I didn't know that there was a movie showing on CBS tonight. Well, thanks for the information. I will surely pass it on to my family and friends. Skee ya later!

I grew up watching the show too.
The name of the car is the General Lee...and he was a famous confederate general in the Civil War.

Oh, yeah, I know who General Lee was. But when I was a kid I never made the connection between the name of the car and the flag on the roof. I was just watching the show for fun. I didn't care about the name of the car or the flag on the roof. It was just a tv show.

Thumbs down

Sorors, As a child the connection was made for me. My mother (Soror), nor my father did not like for us to watch the show. They told us about the flag, what it represented, and who Robert E. Lee was. I do not care to watch the reunion, nor the repeats on TNN. To be more PC, they should at least remove the "Flag" from the car.

I watched Dukes of Hazard as a child and I also watched the reunion show. I loved it. I live in Alabama and it is the heart of racism. I have never thought of it until you mentioned it on the forum. I dislike the use of the confederate flag and what it stands for, but I do not think it would have detered me from watching the show.

Doesn't the NAACP have anything better to do than boycott television shows?? I don't watch that much t.v. anyway but if I do plan to watch the Dukes of Hazard reunion how is that harmful to the black community?? By us not watching it, how is that helpful?? Where is the NAACP when kids are selling drugs and teenagers are having babies? I'm afraid this organization is becoming a front for political endeavors and a way for certain individuals to put themselves in the national spotlight.

Songstress21,

I think the point in boycotting a television show is to show that we are not going to support television shows that represent or glorify images based in racism.

Not watching a show affects its ratings, which affects the television company because if a show gets poor ratings, advertisers will not pay for airtime.

I also wonder how much you know about the NAACP because if you did then you will know that they do more than boycott, they also litigate suits on behalf of plaintiffs who allege discrimination.

AKATUDE,

Thanks for mentioning this, I never made the connection. I used to watch the show too.
