what to do with tshirts
So...at the end of college I had a million shirts from high school/college/sorority/whatever that I knew I shouldn't be wearing as a "grown up", but they had such sentimental value, I couldn't give them up. Many of them were cut into a 12x12 square and put in a scrapbook, but I thought this was a really cute idea for those of you still in college...

What? You mean there's a rule against grown-ups wearing their Greek shirts when they graduate to Grown-Up Land? Somebody forgot to tell me!!

There is a point in time, I think, when wearing your bid-day shirt which is 20 years old is a bit much. But letters - heck, I'll be wearing my letters when I'm 95!

Thank you, Alum, for the wonderful link to the pre-existing thread about this. I couldn't find it before--you are amazing!!
And yes-letters are letters 'til the day we die, but things like "The Mud Pit Games", "Hot-Tub-a-Thon", and "Prom Night!!" have got to go when you could run into an important client at the gym.

Not to mention the Sloppy Seconds Mixer shirt that one Mizzou grad wanted in a quilt that she commissioned. Ick!

I know I'm going to regret asking this....what is a Sloppy Seconds Mixer?

I have no idea! I had to ask my teenager what sloppy seconds was and I was somewhat upset that she knew the answer. The shirt was white with olive green letters in a drippy looking font. Gross, gross, gross.... The quilt turned out quite nicely but I always wondered if the mom (who paid for the quilt) knew what that term meant.
Back on the subject of nice tshirt quilts, they can be very attractive. I made a wallhanging of MIT and SAE shirts for my brother with the coordinating fabric of a dark purple batik. I also made 2 for the D. The one on her college bed used a medium orange batik and incorporated all her activity shirts from hs. The wallhanging one was a running theme and used all her road race and xc/track invitational shirts. The coordinating fabric is of women running. I am in the design stage of one now that will have the student's crew and swim team activities. She probably will go with a purple batik (school colors) or a wavy fabric that reflects her interest in water sports.

They forgot to tell me too. In fact, my chapter was big on making our own....er..."me-nique" shirts and I have continued to do that at my job (I work in a custom shirt printing shop so I make a new shirt for myself every couple of months).

I gave all of my T's away when I graduated and kind of wish that I hadn't. I would love to make a quilt. I made my bid day shirt into a throw pillow. It was blue with dancing Raggedy Anns so I used blue gingham on the back side of the pillow. It turned out really cute.

I have been thinking about turning many of my Alpha shirts into a quilt.... pretty seriously, actually..... but then I realized that 20 t-shirts will be easier for me to store than a quilt will be.
(I'm working with limited storage space -- as it is, I already keep all my poetry books in an unused sink, LOL)

Tshirt quilts don't need to be stored, they can be used as they are quite utilitarian and sturdy. Depending on the width of the sashing, a 20-shirt (4 x 5) quilt is more of a large lapsize as opposed to a bedsize. As well as using it on a bed, you can add a sleeve and hang it on the wall, casually drape it on a couch or chair, etc.
