I've Been Matched!

I wanted to share some exciting news with everyone. In October, I attended an orientation for the Big Brother Big Sister program in my area. Since then, I had a background check, driving record check, interviews, a home visit, and completed training in January. I got a call to say that I've been matched with a "little sister" in the fifth grade. I'm waiting for the case manager to set up our first meeting, but I'm really thrilled. I got involved in this program because our children really need mentors and role models, and I'm happy to share my time with a child.

That is a blessed little girl, I am sure. As a parent and eduator.....just try to reflect on the days when you were her age. Consider her circumstances and discard all pre...judegements....

Congratulations! I know that things will work out for you and your "little sister." Give her a big hug and show a lot of love. Both of you are blessed to have one another. Keep in mind that God blessed you with her for a reason so allow her to bring as much joy into your life as you will add to hers. Much love you you soror.

Soror AKAtude this is a blessing not only for you, but especially for the young lady that can now depend on you. This is so special. I want to do the same thing in New York - but am having no luck. I wish you well and if you need ideas or help with IFFY situations, I am sure you can count on us all but definitely call on me! :-0)

Congrats Akatude!

I have also received word that I will be matched with my mentee sometime after the Easter vacation is over. Since I am a Justice System Mentor, the criminal history checks, drivers lisence/insurance checks, etc are all a part of my process too. While I'm excited about this new endeavor, I'm also VERY nervous. I haven't met my mentee yet, but I asked for an African-American teenage girl (I felt I would have the most inpact on someone in that age group). If anyone can give me some advice on things to do with my mentee (I don't have a lot of money to spend) I would REALLY appreciate it.
