TLC's Mostly True Stories

I was watching this tonight, and the last "story" they showed was this:

There were four fraternity peldges living in the house basement before intitiation. Their pledge master was really mean, and he'd always pick on oen of the over weight pledges. One time he even made them get in a cold shower with their clothes on and then go back and fall asleep wet on the mattress in the basement. Well the next night, the over-weight pledge stole a human hand from his anatomy lab, and since the pledge master was so mean all the peldges wanted to pull a prank on him (this is when I figured this was a load of bs). They all stuck the hand in the toliet like it was coming out of the flush whole. They wanted to scare him, and ran back in the basement and waited for the pledge master to go to the potty. Well, when they heard his footsteps go into the bathroom - the waited for a yell but nothing happened. They figured something was up and curiously went to go investigate, and when they got in the bathroom the pledge master was in the tub shaking - and his hair had turned white. He onyl had a deep stare into space on his face.

TLC went on to say that being scared really badly can turn you hair white - but over a period of time. They concluded this just couldn't be possible because if the peldgemaster did go into shock - the effects wouldn't be immediatly noticable.

But anyways, aside form that - TLC also went on to describe a way some colleges are teaching greeks about the effects of hazing. They do a mock trial using real hazing incidents that happened (not happened at the current time, just a worldly hazing incident from anywhere). Anyways, they put the fraternity on court, with a student judge and then some fake juries and have a mock trial with a sentencing. It shows the fraternities what could happen if they force someone to drink and they happen to die in real time. I thought this was real interesting, because something this involved would probably prove to be a lot better than just telling fraternities "you can get in a lot of trouble - don't do it!".

Do any of y'alls universities do this? Mine doesn't, but I think it is kind of a neat idea!

Mock trials at some natl convos

I've read about some GLOs that have had mock trials at their conventions, both about hazing and boozing.

We had a mock trial at our Convention 4 years ago. The scenario was that the sorority was having a formal and were following the national policies by having a cash bar w/a bartender checking IDs and sober drivers. Since not all of the members were 21, they had a "pre-party" at someone's apartment. Well, a member (might have been a new member...) got drunk at the preparty, and after formal a sober sis took her back to the dorm room and put her to bed. Then the sober sis went on to another party. The girl died because she asphyxiated on her own vomit.

So they staged a trial where the parents sued the chapter, the national, and each sister involved for negligence. I think it was based on an NPC Program, either "Something of Value" or "Our Chapter, Our Choice". It was VERY effective, especially since they personalized it to AST.

Both NPC and NIC have programs. NPC's is called SOMETHING OF VALUE and NIC's is called IMPACT. CPH can can bring the program to campus to educate the fraternities and sororities. The programs tend to be very effective. I have facilitated a SOMETHING OF VALUE session before but was unable to make it when UCLA brought IMPACT winter quarter. I highly suggest talking to your Panhellenic Advisor about these programs.
