We also use the ladybug. I think it goes along with the "Phi Mu Lady" thing, but maybe a lot of chapters have chosen a different local mascot.

LADIbugs
Hi hun! I am bummed because our local mascot was the ladibugs and for some random reason some of my chapter decided to give it up because it's another sororities local mascot, I think ZTA, BUT I think I wanna try to bring it back...lol... because tons of Phi Mu chapters use it!!

Lady Bugs
Lady Bugs were used as an "Unofficial" mascot for years. But in the late 1970's, Sir Fidel was adopted as the Official mascot when another NPC group picked the lady bug as their official mascot. Use of the lady bug has been officially discouraged ever since.
There are lots of cute lions out there....we need to give them a home!!!

I am in ASA and a lot of our chapters use ladybugs but it's not official (i.e. mandated by HQ or on our national website). We really don't have an official mascot. I would prefer lions to ladybugs, myself.

I had never heard of ladybugs as a mascot until I was on GC, but damn, I bet they are much easier to draw when you are decorating stuff for your little!

Exactly DeltaBetaBaby!!! They are MUCH easier to draw Plus we have ADPi on our campus too and it gets confusing seeing all the different lion stuff. We use lions as our door decs and of course incorporate Sir Fidel in here and there but I think by far I have much more ladybug stuff.

ladybugs ladybugs!
Kappa Upsilon uses ladybugs! Story goes that one of our chapter founders, Liddy Chatham Black, used ladybug everything-stationary, signs, stickers- and when the local sorority whose colors were crimson and cream went national to Phi Mu the ladybugs stayed! We use them a lot more than lions even though I guess it's discouraged.[FONT=times new roman][COLOR=deeppink][FONT=times new roman]

it's so strange to hear people say everyone say stuff about ladybugs as a mascot, even as unofficial, for Phi Mu, just b/c we've always just stuck to lions. Completely understandable about easier to draw- but one of the girls in my chapter has MASTERED her drawing of a lion, so we're lucky to have her around

Phi Mu at IUP was founded in 1950 by a local, Pi Gamma who inteded to become Phi Mu the following year. They used the pink elephant as a mascot, and until our chapter closed there was a pink elephant family. But we primarily used the lion for everything.

I bet it depends a lot on how old the chapter is and who else is on campus.
Like Pam said, if the ladybugs *used* to be big, but now are discouraged... well, who wants to give up tradition? so I'd imagine some of the older chapters use them for that reason.
As for who else is on campus -- if ADPi is on campus (they're lions), the chapter might go for ladybugs to keep things less confusing. Here at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. ASA is on campus, and they're officially ladybugs. So we just use lions.
The poor Sigmas are sailboats. Beautiful imagry ("forward motion,") but just try finding a stuffed sailboat for your lil sis.

Hehe we don't have Sigmas on our campus so I never knew what their mascot was, but yea I can imagine that trying to find a stuffed sailboat would be somewhat difficult.
My chapter uses both the lion and the ladybug, mainly b/c we have ADPi on campus and they were here first, so we're going with a local mascot to keep things less confusing. I do know though that the ADPi's use their diamond more than anything.

Mascot
I never knew Phi Mu chapters actually had "local" mascots....We always used Sir Fidel. Then again a sister has two little dogs and we dressed them up as mascots for phi mu events. That was always cute.

Actually, we at Phi Kappa chapter have had the ladybug as our "chapter" mascot for years. I never knew so many other chapters did it too! I always thought it was just us!
