a KU colony update

I'm sorry to say that my experience as a colony member of ZTA was not positive. There have been plenty of setbacks, despite what I/O may have said to the University Daily Kansan. We have still not been installed as a chapter, and I don't know if there is any intention to do so.
We probably lost about 80 - 90% of our original nm class. We have had to do COB like crazy since the beginning of this semester. We had no money for programing since people don't want to pay their dues unless they know we'll become a chapter. Not only that, but half of our EC and PC have quit throughout the year.
There are probably a thousand things that could have been done to prevent all of this. I hope ZTA will learn from this experience the next time you try to start a chapter. I'm personally very hurt and disappointed with the way things have been handled here. I know that I am not alone.

I am sorry that you have had such a rough experience starting a chapter. I do that KU is going to be initiated in the fall. The process is a very difficult one to bring a chapter from nothing to fully functioning in a year. I hope that furture experiences will be better and that girls are learning from each other. Also CROWNing is a part of ZTA life. As a member of a chapter that turns 80 in the fall we CROWN all year. It can be a pain and "waste' your time but think about all the girls who will get ot be sisters.

Yes, it takes a long time for you to obtain installation. It took a whole year for my chapter to be installed. Installation doesn't happen instantly. For instance, the day you request to become a colony of ZTA doesn't mean the next day IO will come down to Install you. In fact, it won't be within the next month. ALL of the members have to really want to become a ZTA chapter. It doesn't take just 90%, 95%, or even 99% . . . it takes 110% effort and determination of the chapter in order to become a full chapter of ZTA. The responsibility to become a full ZTA cannot fall upon just a few people but every single member. Also, IO lets you be pretty much independent in recruiting, etc. They are not going to look over your shoulders to make sure you are doing EVERYTHING or EVERYTHING correctly. They want you do to do it on your own in the beginning so that you'll be able to do it later on so you won't have to have someone from IO looking over your shoulder all of the time.

I don't think anybody was expecting to get installed instantly. However, when I rushed KU's ZTA colony, the powers that be said the colony would get installed in January. If it's now April and they haven't been installed yet, I can see where they'd be upset and frustrated.

I'm sorry things have been going so poorly for you, Kugirl. Are you still in the colony?

hey.. i'm not a ZTA but i am a founder of my chapter.. i know ALL about the trials and tribulations of colonizing... it took us a year and a half of organized chaos to obtain our charter, and that year and a half was worth every second...i think i speak there for every one of our founding sisters.. good things are worth the wait!

I certainly hope that you have stuck it out in the colony. Zeta is definitely worth it. As a new chapter, and even as an older chapter there are always struggles. Chapter members do come and go and those that stay must continue to strive for the greatest and to encourage new sisters as well. I was a Zeta just down the road from you at Baker and I know that we CROWNed year round as well. It is frustrating, but you will always have to do it, and it does benefit the chapter. I have found from my experiences that CROWNed sisters often became the most loyal and the most active. I hope that all proves well for your chapter in the long run. The area has been long awaiting another Zeta chapter. Good luck and keep us posted!
