Angry I hate the Immigration Office

I got a phone call from my boyfriend's mom tonight saying that AchtungBoy, who went home to Ireland back in February, won't be coming to my graduation on Saturday because immigration is sending him straight back home. Apparently his visa is invalid, although I don't know why a visa is necessary for a two-week visit anyway when he has a return ticket. He made it to Detroit, but that's as far as he's going and who knows when I'll see him again.

I really, really hate the Immigration Office.

So he's an Irish national? How did you meet him? That's kinda no that's really cool. Sorry, I don't mean to hijack your thread and I'm sorry you won't be able to see him on graduation.

Ya know Dana, me and you are both not having very good days. So, let's just blow up something and/or pose as immigration office employees and get Marty back...as long as he promises not to steal my beer again.

I'm so sorry AchtungBaby! Mr. Swissmiss and I have been dealing w/ our own immigration issues w/ this "Homeland Security Special Registration" crap. They've been detaining people left and right, deporting most of them. Thank God he got out ok. Just be thankful your man isn't Arab. I do hope it all works out for the both of you and that he can come back as soon as possible!

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't EU citizens get visa on arrival? If he does, then technically he doesn't need a visa to stay for 1 month. Maybe he should arrive in NY with the Irish passport.

BTW, custom officer are the worst, especially in NY. I don't mind being check or anything, but they are so rude I was about to smack them. But then they have the authority to just mess with you and keep you indefinite for suspicious behavior. (Happen to a friend who got pissed off and started to yell at the lady)

Aww...that's a shame. My "Mr. Navane" is a British citizen and he was allowed to attend my graduation.

Either the Immigration Officer clearly made a mistake, or your boyfriend truly didn't qualify for entry. See the link below:

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_web/visa/niv/vwp.htm

For example, Does he have a criminal record? Did he previously overstay his 90-day visa? Did he say that he might get a job?

Generally, it seems like people get turned away because they gave the Immigration Officer the impression that they might break the rules. Case in point, here's what it says at the bottom of the website:

"Important reminder: Visa-free travel does not include those who plan to study, work or remain more than 90 days. Such travelers need visas. If an officer of the BCIS believes that a visa-free traveler is going to study, work or stay longer than 90 days, the officer will refuse to admit the traveler."

At any rate, I'm sad that he won't be able to be there with you. Are you going to go out to Ireland to visit him?

.....Kelly

damasa--I met him on an airplane when I was coming back from France 3 years ago, and he was coming back to university in America from a visit home to N. Ireland.

navane--He was planning to stay for 2 weeks, and he definitely wasn't going to work! However, I think that they said his student visa wasn't valid when he came back here from Christmas break (he was still going to school at the time), so that's why they weren't letting him in now. But I still don't understand why he would've even shown them the damn visa because my parents' friends from England came to visit them two summers ago and they didn't need a visa.

At any rate, I'm still pissed. Can't say that I'm surprised, because somehow Achtungboy always runs into problems and can't make it. My family is strongly advising me to tell him not to call me *ever* again...that's *if* he calls me. (He had his mother call and tell me the news this time...and last time, too, come to think of it.) I don't know...the whole thing just sucks.

I don't know if Ireland is part of the Visa Waiver Program, the way Germany and other countries are....

I'm sorry your guy won't be able to attend graduation!

it seems like EVERYONE is having immigration issues it doens't matter the country of origin or reason for travel... i know a couple from HS that are getting married this summer... her parents' visa has been denied, so they will not be able to attend the ceremony. Hopefully, the couple will be able to visit the parents overseas within the next few months.
