I'm an alum so it's been a while since I've done recruitment myself, but..
The Kappa HQ website (
kappa.org ) has some resources for ideas. For one, they have a long list of things other chapters have done for their philanthropy round. Recruitment varies all over the country from ice-water parties to full themes-and-skits. You can find the information in the kappa's-only section.
The key to picking a theme is to figure out what your "brand" is. For example, during FMR all PNMs attend our party after they attend Delta Gamma. We know that DG always wears all white on the first day of rush and stands in a big line and has the PNM’s greet all the sisters formally. To contrast we chose to decorate with flowers (we bought potted plants from Home depot, and donated them to a nursing home after rush. We also used fake flowers/ivy from Michael’s to drape over furniture). After attending a formal, all-white party, PNMs then walked into Kappa where we had colorful flowers and an informal rotation. DG’s brand was unity and formal sorority, Kappa’s brand was individuality, vibrancy, and a laid-back manner. Develop your brand idea, then work on your theme.
Some ideas for theme; although remember – most potential members won’t even notice your theme anyway, because they will (hopefully) be too busy learning about Kappa and meeting sisters!
- Kappachino - coffee and cookie decorating. Hang cut outs of coffee cups on the wall with meaningful quotes or pictures of sister events.
- Kappa for all Seasons: If you have a four-party rush, you can have a decorating theme for all the seasons.
- Kappa around the world: Pick "locations": Paris, Hawaii, Bombay, New York, etc.
- Kappa "things": Blue and blue day, Minerva/Owl/Scholarship day, Key/membership/alumni day, and Sapphire day (final party?)
- Decades theme: You could do 50's-80's or just pick random decades (1870's, 1920's, 1960's, 1980's), etc.
Good luck. And if you want skit ideas, PM me (I’m not giving the good ones away to just anyone on GC!)
Loyally,
Paula
