Eh, I was wondering why at 12:15am last night my ex told me, "Happy May 2003." I thought he was just being a nerd. Is May Day actually a day? Or is this a just because thread? At any rate, Happy May to everyone!

Woo-hoo! May Day!

Yes, May Day is a real holiday. In some countries, it's Internatiol Labour Day (explains why Arya is off of work), others it's just a day of celebration.

I was in Rome for May Day last year, and the city shut down. No cabs, buses, or stores were open, but Oasis and a few other bands did have a concert in front of The Basilica of St. John in Lateran (ie, the most important church in the Catholic, if not the Christian, world).

Yup Mayday is a real holiday in many countries. It is similar to our labor day. I was in France last year for mayday and everything was shut down. The only thing going on were some pre-election demonstrations in the streets. I think we should have mayday instead of finals Enjoy your day off all you international greekchatters!

"May is like the first rising of the curtain before the play, the first measures of the orchestral overture. No movement afterward comes up to that. *Bertha Damon

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
Garlands of flowers everywhere
All of the colors in the rainbow
Maidens with blossoms in their hair

Flowers that mean we should be happy
Throwing aside a load of care
Oh, May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
May Day means happy days are there

"May Day is Lei Day in Hawai'i" -- it's a song and a custom and a festival. In Hawai'i on the first of May, everyone wears flowers, schools stage pageants and give prizes, contests are held for the most beautiful lei or garland, a Queen is crowned, competitions in both ancient and modern hula are held and popular entertainers give a concert or show for the locals.
