Term Limits

I know this is a serious issue in the NO area at this moment. Now I see that NY could enter into this same predicament.

The mayor is approaching the end of his mayoral tenure. According to the law, he cannot run for the office. However, in order to vie for the position, he must get the vote from the people to decide whether or not he will be able to run for ANOTHER term.

New Yorkers will face this in the near future from my understanding. The mayor there has received overwhelming support since the incident. What are your thoughts about term limits? If a politician has "served his or her time" should they be able to seek other terms?

If this were the mayor of your city, would you support him or her for ANOTHER term after their normal term is up?

I'm for term limits, and yet against them, too. For example:

For term limits:
Strom Thurmond should have been gone a looooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnng time ago!

Against term limits:
I miss Slick Willie.

However, I think the people should be able elect who they have confidence in and who they believe is best for the job. At the same time, I think over a period of time some politicians begin to lose sight of why they are in Washington, why they are mayor or why they are sitting on city council, etc. In that case, people should use their power and vote him/her out of office.

The last congressman from my home district set a self-imposted limit of two terms. He was a republican, but I think he did a great job in Washington. The people in my district wanted him to run again, but he chose not to. If only they all could remain so focused.

guiliani's approval rating has gone through the roof, since 9.11.01. begrudgingly, i will admit that he's done an excellent job the past few weeks, all things considered. however, my memory runs longer than 2 weeks. during his time in office, he has struck me as being extremely insensitive and in some instances, downright rude, in dealing w/incidents that have happened to those who aren't caucasian.

his time is up, so he should get the ol' heave ho.

Though I'm neither a resident of NO nor NY, I agree that there should be mayoral term limits and those limits should be observed. In all fairness, you cannot change the rules of the game in the middle of the game just because you're having so much fun! It's someone else's turn, so move over.

Here in California, we've had term limits for various offices, including mayors in San Diego and Los Angeles, the state Assembly and Senate.

What worries me is that black political communities are often caught in a bind, because proper successors had not been groomed. It seemed, in some cases, that if you were a black elected official you had a job for life.

I think that's why some may not want term limits in Congress -- long-serving officials like John Conyers, William Clay (from Missouri) and Maxine Waters, who have constituencies and influence, would be forced out of office.

I'm for term limits, b/c they are necessary in order to keep people from staying in office until they die...BUT...Even though I am not from NY (therefore I do not know exactly how well Gulliani has performed throughout his entire term in office), I believe in times of a state of emergency the current Official should be able to stay in office until we are out of the water IF he or she has proven that they are qualified to handle the situation AND their constituents are backing them up...I would rather see this occur than have another elected official take office and not know how to accurately handle a situation as horrible as this one...

I don't know...It's a lot to swallow, esp. if you're in NY...I pray that everything turns out good though...

Bill Clinton told the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum that he does not agree with the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution. That amendment prohibits a US President from serving more than two terms. This amendment prevents Clinton from running again.
The amendment was passed after FDR served 4 consecutive terms. Clinton says that the law should only allow Presidents 2 consecutive terms. This would mean Presidents could run at a later time. He cites rising life expectancies as a factor.
Clinton says that later on a country may experience problems that a previous President helped people face. He says: "People would like to bring that man or woman back but they would have no way to do so." Clinton did not say he wanted to return.

AKAtude I am originally from SC and I agree that Strom Thurmond should have been gone a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago. I don't think that people keep voting for him BECAUSE of what he's doing for the people. In fact, I really don't know why he has been kept in for so long, but it is quite clear it's not for the people, black people at least - who, might I add, have also been voting for him.

On either Meet the Press or the Chris Matthews Show, someone said that the main Democratic candidates for President met this weekend. This received no attention due to Clinton's speech. Someone said it was yet another case of "Clinton sucking all of the oxygen out of the room." They also said that it would be funny if they repealed the 22nd Ammendment so Bill and Hillary could run against each other for President.
