How do we compare?
The Fratenrity Executives Assn. (composed of the paid staff of male GLOs) does an annual secret survey of GLOs in Oct. 2002, and the SAE magazine has published partial results for the "Big Six".

SPE - 239, 18, 5531, 13,907, 54, $425
Sigma Chi - 215, 6, 3418, 11,450, 50, $420
SAE - 208, 6, 3,000, 9200, 43, $545
PiKA - 208, 5, 4378, 10779, 51, $389
KS - 201, 7, 2945, 8157, 39, $330

The numbers are correct
I inquired, and the "Dir. of Expansion" said the original numbers are correct.
He says TKE has 270 "units" if you add chapters and colonies together.

well it appears that we have a lot of work to do because we should be number 1 in all catagories yet we still did rather ok

being number 1 in all catagories is a nice idea, but it's totally unrealistic... we focus on different things than other fraternities do.
For instance, operating budget, we're te 6th largest, with 2.175Mil, with the top at SAE at 3.116Mil, we're about 500K below the peer average, but 900K above the FEA average.
On total 4 year expensesper member, were' also below the FEA average. not by much, but we are.
For staffing we're at 9th for total number of staff, and 29th(of 32) on staff members per group. now while we would like to see that number go up, we don't want the additional costs going along with it, thus the push to use more provincial people, and the push at IHQ this year to get teh numbers up of volunteers so eventually they can do the chapter visits and at the same time do alot more support for each chapter.
So while it might be a nice idea to be top in all catagories, or even most, it's unrealistic... kinda like fairly sweeping the olympics... it just ain't gonna happen.

I would personally love to see all them sweeped but I believe initiation, chapter size, and colonies could always be larger

the worst part is that we've had more chapters shut down than most fraternities have ever even set up. granted some of them have been rebuilt, but two years ago the total number of teke chapters that had been shut down was 213, just think if we still had them all.

thing is, MOST of the chapters that were shut down were shut down for a reason... sometimes the chapter lost interest in recruiting, sometimes it just fell on hard times and couldn't pay the bills, and sometimes they were doing bad things and in that case it's far better to shut them down then to keep them around... I'm sure if you've been around for a while you've heard of all kinds of dumb things chapters have done and got shut down after.
we flat out couldn't keep that many chapters since as of now we don't have the infastructure to maintain them. We are working on it, but it's going to take some time, especially since as a whole, we don't have the money or want to be paying alot more, so we're moving to a largely volunteer structure, with alot more of the overall responsibilities going to the alumni as far as direct chapter support, so hopefully with the new infastructure, we can maintain more chapters than we can with say 3 guys looking out for the mississippi and west, and 6 guys looking out for the chapters east of it.
so it's amazing that we can maintain the chapters we do now with the money we've invested into it.
it's like they've always said, you don't work at IHQ for the money... those guys are making as big or bigger of a donation than most Tekes will in their lives.
So give it time, we're working to get more chapters goin, the new colonization method is really making some strong chapters from the very beginning too, so we are moving in the right direction...
