Early 90s MTV and Greeks

I recall, in my early years (early 90s or so), when MTV used to show music videos, before they sold out, before it became all about pop, before it didn't just cater to tweeners, an episode of MTV news. It had happened just after some students rioted in some colleges, particularly Colorado/Colorado State. It was a report on how people were blaming the greeks for starting the riots.

What was so funny was that they actually gave the greeks a chance to speak against those claims, and actually reported on how Greeks were about more than just "binge drinking and partying"! They actually made a semi-reputable report (it still IS MTV) promoting the good things about us and not exploit the sterotypes.

Weird what 10+ years will do.

Anybody remember this? If I have any facts wrong, please correct me, I was still in my early teens at the time.

BTW, since I can't edit the title, I know I spelled Early wrong

Stan, you're right. I was just thinking about this the other day.

I do vaguely remember that report, but what I was thinking of was the game show Remote Control. The contestants always wore letter sweatshirts if they were in a GLO and did a shout-out to their chapter - it was a cool thing to do. Nowadays they'd probably get "I don't know why you're on this game show if you have money to buy friends."

Amaya on Real World Hawaii was also raked over the coals for being in a sorority and actually being proud of it - I'm not saying everything she did was perfect, but the editing was so anti-Greek it was ridiculous.

LOL! I was one of those contestants! My show was broadcast in early 1989.

But yes, Stan, you're right. The news reporting has really gone down the drain. <Journalism teacher hat on> MTV, although blatantly liberal, used to have more of a serious note when reporting on news events - I'm not sure if Kurt Loder is still in charge, but I think the kids might've taken over. </hat off>

On one hand, I think MTV is taking revenge on all GLOs for refusing to participate in any MTV show. I find this really odd, because so many MTV staff members are greek themselves. You'd think they'd want to give greeks a fair shot, but it doesn't seem to be happening.

Anyway, MTV's content has changed too, as has the Tweeners' lifestyle. The videos leave nothing to the imagination, while 10 years ago, everyone was still "O-My-Gawding" about that girl's butt.

I remember seeing a D Phi E sweatshirt on Remote Control. My sister and I just happened to be watching and we were like Oh my Gawwwd! lol!

When I was pledging, MTV came to my college town to film some type of free concert with Warren Zevon and a half dozen other bands. It wasn't exactly popular music then, but it was fun. They picked the cutest girles from my pledge class and sorority (not me) to hold a banner on the stage. I think that my school had raised the most money for SAMS Students Against Multiple Sclerosis and the free concert was the reward.
