Angry Get this BS!!!

OK, so I gotta spout off to somebody, so who better than my online sisters? The Zeta House at the College of Charleston is over 200 years old. Which in a way is kinda cool, but in another way is kinda bad. It's an old wooden house, and the wood apparently is all rotten, we have recently learned that we have mammoth termites, and it's a bigger fire hazard than a book of matches. But it's owned by the College, so you think that our office of residence life would do something about this, right? Well, apparently the fire marshal came in to do an inspection at the beginning of July and concluded that our house was unlivable. (I know this makes it seem like the house is a rathole. It's actually very nice - one of the nicest on campus. The problem is what's behind the walls, the stuff you can't see.) So, now the College is paying for all these renovations FINALLY that we have been asking National Housing Corp for forever. So we are getting our kitchen and bathroom totally revamped (how that helps, I am not really sure, but they really need to be renovated, so I am not complaining.) Here's the problem - the renovations start TODAY, meaning that the 10 house girls can't move in until "hopefully" August 19th - and classes start the 20th!! And I was originally supposed to move in on July 31st, so now I have to find a place to crash for like 3 (maybe more) weeks. Thankfully, a fellow sister, to whom I owe my life, is letting me stay with her. Meanwhile, Recruitment Workshop starts August 11th, so all the house girls at least have to be in town by then. And recruitment starts August 23, and the first round of parties takes place in the sorority house. I currently live with our VP III, and she is freaking out about what we're gonna do if the renovations aren't done in time. I mean, did CofC residence life people not think to worry about these things sooner? I know they knew about the termites as early as March or April. Additionally, we have to close off our second-floor porch (which was the official "smoking porch") because apparently the beams are so rotten that the thing could fall down any second.

OK, sorry for all the b*tching, but I had to complain about it to someone. Death to the stupid employees of South Carolina state colleges!!!

Dianne,
One of my neighbors up here was a sister from CofC. I told her about your post. She was laughing and horrified in about the five minutes after I told her. Apparently, in 1998, ZTA housing spent a HUGE amount of money on your house while she was there. The women from IO who came there to inspect the house and make payment tot he foreman almost jumped down her throat for leaving a warm soda on a $900 table.

I think the thing she was most horrified at was that your sisters would miss out on the fun feeling of floating on the second story balcony. She said when she was there, they could stand on one board, then straddle four bards and rock. They felt like they were floating. She said it was fun.

I hoep your repairs are done in time. Good luck with recruitment.

zl,
Meredith

Yeah, NHC redecorated the downstairs living, dining, and formal rooms and recarpeted in the summer of 1999. I pledged in the fall of 1999, so I never saw what it looked like before, but from what older sisters told me, the redecoration was really needed. That is probably one of the reasons it's been hard to get our kitchen and bathroom redone (which need it soooo bad - our showers look like prison cells or something!! ) So we are glad the renovations are getting done and that they are being paid for by the great state of South Carolina. But I swear, the people who work at the College of Charleston sometimes are so dumb! The residence life people drive me bonkers!!! I just really hope it's done by the first round of recruitment parties. Y'all keep your fingers crossed for Eta Lambda!!

I went to high school with one of your sisters! Her name is Elizabeth Phillips! She was a year behind me, but knew each other. My name is Erica White so someone say hey to her from me!

But, relax about the repairs because our house is in desperate need of repair. I am a Winthrop ZTA and the pipes in our house need to be replaced because they all leak. They are all interconnected so when one pipe leaks there's no water pressure for the whole house. Also, when one drain clogs the whole house clogs up.

For the pipes to be unconnected, it'd be cheaper to build a new house because ours is 105 years old. So, I feel your pain with renovations.

Our attic has been rumored to have bats since I don't know when!

And now there's college construction on Main St. which has our front door blocked and workers coming in and out of the house sometimes without the sisters being notified all the time..great googly moogly!!
