Question about shoes

Hi folx,

It's come to my attention that I need to get a pair of white shoes for my white dress...and I was wondering...does your chapter implement the "white closed-toe shoes" policy? My chapter's been forcing us to get shoes that cover our toes since I can remember. Does anyone know if that's IHQ's policy?

I was reading the attire requirements for Convention and it said nothing about the shoes having to be closed-toe...it just has to be white.

I was also looking at Initiation pictures from the Quarterly and noticed that some sisters had open-toe shoes on.

Oh Leadership Consultant Jen (Belle)....or anyone, please enlighten me!

At BH, we always have to wear closed-toe shoes when we're in badge attire, including Initiation dresses. It may be just us. But, I'm serving as a Page at Convention, and the letter I got from Suzanne Carmack Spicer specifically states 'closed-toe brown shoes' for our matching page outfits. So I would imagine that for the Initiation services, the shoes would have to be closed-toe also.
Jen would know for sure though.

I don't anything about Convention, but for Initiation our chapter can wear open-toed shoes but we have to wear white pantyhose.

I remember reading in a certain manual.... (HINT HINT WINK WINK) that the entire chapter at initiation should wear white attire, covering the shoulder with white shoes and hose covering the toes. No jewelry is to be worn, except an engagement ring or wedding band... period.

That is what I remember though.

we had the open toed shoes but people either went bare leg or wore neutral or white stockings. However, I have looked at a couple of AGD sites and some girls are sleeveless in their intitation pics. We had them to but we covered up for Initiation and took them off at feast of roses.

I have open toed shoes for initiation. I think, for what I get from the whole thing, is that you just have to be white from shoulder to toe. so as long as you are wearing white tights, your golden. Wat I hate is that we can't wear pants. I like pants, I want to wear pants, it's almost sexist that we can't. I mean like a nice dress suit. Why is that so bad? Tights suck, I don't want to have to wear them. And, does anyone else really really not like their whites outfit? the second I am done with it, it flies off at lightning speed. But, how much can you find that's all white in november?

Wow...it's an honor that you were selected to be a page! One of my chapter sisters (Kapua) was also selected and got the call from Suzanne.

Thanks for your help guys. Fortunately I'm meeting with our chapter prez and advisor tonight so I'll try to find out more stuff.

I asked our Leadership Advisor Ronda, and she even admitted that she didn't know for sure.

She mentioned that even she didn't understand why we made such a big fuss over closed-toe shoes. Back in her days as a collegian she said that they had the option to wear open-toe as long as it looked appropriate. However, it did make sense that girls wear closed-toes since it does look better with your white gowns.

Here in Hawaii we don't wear white gowns or dresses as it's been tradition to wear the white muumuu. But see, open-toe shoes are appropriate to wear with the muumuu. Our advisor (who was part of the charter class) can't remember if it's been a set rule by IHQ or if it was because of the efforts of our former advisor. I absolutely love wearing my muumuu...and I'm not that quick to take it off.

What's funny is that at our installation almost 10 years ago, IHQ gave us the option of wearing hose with our chapter dress. Many of the installing officers were so affected by the heat that they made hose optional. Most of us wear hose because it's the appropriate thing to do, but if members don't wear it, it's not a rule that's strictly enforced.

At my chapter we have very strict rules. You have to have a white dress, covering the shoulders (or wear a white cardigan overtop) and white hose, white hose and a slip, white closed toe shoes and the dress has to be either tea length or to the ankle. No jewelry (except wedding ring or engagement ring), only minimal makeup, and our badges.
That is it. We jump out of those outfits as soon as possible. Some sisters wear the really expensive ones and some (like me) wear dresses that our moms made! (so much cheaper!).

I think shorts being inappropriate is probably self-explanatory. As for pants, I guess its just because pants are almost always less formal than a dress. IMHO, there are so few occasions these days that require you to dress up, that I don't mind wearing something dressier. The thing that horrified me when I was in college was that we weren't allowed to wear any jewelry or makeup at initiation. I felt naked and dreadfully pale! Thank goodness IHQ has lightened up on the no-makeup rule!!!

Maybe our chapter is less strict, but I wear the same long white skirt and open toed dress sandles for each initiation. A lot of our girls even wear short dresses (as long as they're below the knee). I think we should have our ritual chair read her manual!

I agree, Greeklawgirl...While there are pants that can be dressy, if they open up "pants" in the appropriate attire, you'd probably have someone out there wear white jeans...which would be way too casual for our Initiation Ceremony!!

I think it's interesting to see how much things can vary from chapter to chapter!
