Gun to your head question
Ok, I know what you all are going to say. So PLEASE Don't Say It!
I just want to know everyone's opinion.
If you had a gun to your head and you HAD to name ONE (JUST ONE) sorority and fraternity that is the BEST WORLDWIDE, which would it be?
I know people are going to say, all are the best, there are good and bad chapters in every school, you have to keep an open mind, etc. etc.
I just want to know.
In my opinion, Kappa Kappa Gamma is the best sorority and Sigma Chi the best fraternity.
Thanks!

ok you know people are going to say this so I'll say it -
thats the most pointless question - everyone thinks his/her fraternity/sorority is the best so thats what they will say....I mean let me guess you are Kappa and your bf is a Sigma Chi?
I don't mean to poke at you and please don't take offense, I just think its a stupid question

I'm going to have to say D Phi E because

I haven't experienced any other sorority
At my school it was the only sorority I felt I could possibly have joined,
these girls are my best friends even after we've all graduated
I volunteer of Headquarters and my sorority has a strong, true, concept of sisterhood that is SORORITY WIDE
The best fraternity? I think Sigma Phi Epsilon is a very well run, organized group of men.
I think every sorority has a similar goal: sisterhood and integrity. Isn't there a Dave Matthews quote "Turns out not where but who your with that matters?"
I think that is so true!

Actually - she's not a Kappa. I think it says a lot about people to be able to love your own organization with everything that you have but still recognize that there are others out there that are stronger. And there's nothing wrong with that b/c every organization can always improve.

this is true
I just think the question is vague - I mean every GLO has their strong points and weak points so its hard - in my opinion - to define which one is best...I mean everyone has their own idea what best is you know?
Personally if I HAD to choose and there were a gun to my head - I would say Chi Omega or AOPi for sorority and Pike or Lambda Chi for fraternity. I've never had a bad encounter with any member from these groups thats why I'm going to go with those

I would agree that Kappa Kappa Gamma is probably the most well-known (especially among non-Greeks who aren't familiar with the Greek system -- most of the non-Greeks I know are only familiar with Kappa, Tri Delt and maybe Chi O) sorority that there is . . . and Sigma Chi is definitely up there for fraternities. But I don't think there's any one thing that makes either of them stand out from the rest of the crowd. I don't think Kappa has any programming that sets it above and beyond the rest of the sororities, for example. There's no way to prove whether or not its sisterhood is better than any other sororities' or anything like that.
Maybe you meant to ask about the most "prestigious" sororities? There I can see Kappa being at or near the top of the list. But as for best, it's really hard to tell. From what I can see from their website, Delta Gamma seems to have awesome programs -- but who knows how it's actually implemented at the individual schools. And the intangibles like sisterhood, philanthropy, etc. -- what criteria are we using for "best"?
I know you haven't been around this site for a while, but we try to avoid topics like this because
1) like you said, there really ISN'T any one right answer because there's no set qualifying criteria for what makes a great GLO
2) it can lead to hurt feelings
3) it's really unnecessary, since you can have a great experience no matter which sorority you end up in, national dominance has no bearing on individual campus dominance, etc., and the topic can negatively influence PNMs who visit this site and decide they're "only going to go Kappa because it's the best sorority."
Still, if you want people to continue the discussion, you should probably clarify your intent a little -- what should the qualifications for "best" consist of? Otherwise we're just going to get a thread full of people saying things like, "I had a great experience with ABC" or whatever their group is.

Maybe if I rephrased the question to which sorority/fraternity has the best reputation?
The reason I ask that is my girlfriends and I over lunch this past weekend were talking about expansion and in our opinion, expanding a sorority that is seeped in heritage, reputation, etc we feel gives the new group an added benefit.
That is how we fell into which group we felt was the "best overall" knowing this would open a huge can of worms.
But to answer your question, no I am not a Kappa and my boyfriend was not a Sigma Chi. I'm not married yet but if I end up marrying a Sigma Chi I'll let you know!

Sugar and Spice, my last response must have been posted at the exact same time yours was.
Sorry for starting this. I hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings and I hope that people don't only rush KKG/SC because I think they are "the best."
I didn't mean to cause trouble.

Don't worry about it -- you're new, nobody expects you to know everything about the site yet.
I think this is a difficult topic for people because, while it IS a legitimate one that I think SHOULD be discusssed and that shouldn't hurt people's feelings, it often does. Not only that, but potential new members visit this site all the time, and since they aren't Greek yet they often take whatever they hear about Greek life as gospel. Some girls hear Kappa is great so they decide that's the only group they want to rush -- even if Kappa is tiny at their school or they don't fit in with the Kappas at all.
You can do a search for "best sorority" or "best fraternity" or something along those lines, and I'm sure lots of posts will come up -- you can always check out old posts for ideas.

Okay, I understand the question and I don't really have a problem with it however I think answers will vary largely based on where people are from. Here in Colorado I tend to think very highly of PiPhi, DG, Chi O and Kappa since their chapters at CU and CSU (DG's not at CSU but very strong at CU) are top tier.
I have met a grand total of two Delta Zeta's from UNC and that's just because one girl used to work for my parents. I have never met or been familiar with a member or chapter of ADPi, ZTA or PhiMu though I understand they are excellent organizations.
So, I'd be happy to give you my opinions but it would be highly biased as, I'm sure, would everyone else's.

When I talk to people about the best fraternities I usually get one of three answers: Beta Theta Pi, Sigma Chi, SAE
as far as sororities Id have to say Chi Omega or Kappa Kappa Gamma

I would have to say for the fraternities Beta Theta Pi is my choice. This is not just because of pride for my fraternity.
I think that there are a number of reasons that Beta stands out.

The Men of Principle initiative: Has been recognized by NIC as a leading example of fraternity education and method of improving chapters. The results partnered chapters have produced speak for the strenghth of the initiative.
Beta is one of the few (the only???) NIC organizations where the power is ultimately held by the undergraduates. The General Convention held annually is the ultimate authority in Beta. Throughout the year we have an Administrative Secretary and President, but their positions are more focused on keeping the organization of the General Fraternity in order, rather than passing out punishments or handing out charters.
We are one of the few organizations being asked by universities to come to their campus. Administrators and Greek Life advisors are actually lobbying for colonies of Beta Theta Pi to come to their universities (Columbia, SLU and Oklahoma State are examples).
Beta has always been a pioneer in the fraternity world, whether printing an open constitution, dividing into districts for administrative purposes, fraternity wide minimum GPA requirements for members, or printing a fraternity magazine; Beta has continually been at the leading edge of the fraternity world.
The longest continually open fraternity chapter in the Greek world is a Beta Chapter - The chapter at Washington & Jefferson College founded June 1st 1842. That's 160 years!!! Older than all but a few fraternities, and it's been in continuous operation the entire time!
I think that Phi Delt, SAE, and Sig Ep also deserve to be mentioned in terms of top fraternities nationally.
As for sororities, I think Chi Omega stands out just for being such a large organization. They seem to be very strong at the national level.

You will soon learn that the tolerance for redundancy here is low.
Especially when it's a question that has been asked many many times and almost never fails to upset somebody.
I don't mind it yet, but if I'd been here two years and seen the same type of post crop up again and again and again, I'd get sick of it too.

To add humor to this thread:
I would tend to think that if someone held a gun to my head and asked me such a question I would probably think that the person wasn't there mentally.
Ok sad attempt. But shiiiiiiiiii
