Unity?
Earlier this week a sister of another sorority on my campus was arrested in a drug bust off campus. I'll keep the exact name off this post bc I really don't want this to be something about how good or bad the org is.
Anyway...in the sezied items, along with 10lbs of marijuana, 55grams of cocain, some valium, oxycontin, ecstasy and almost $15,000 CASH, was what looks to be a small canvas zipper bag with the org's greek letters on it. The bag looks like a deposit bag. The girl who was arrested was the sorority's treasurer. So needless to say our college greek life is in the public eye a bit.
Panhellenic had first asked us all to refrain from wearing letters for the rest of the week bc the media is around our campus and since it is small they can easily find us. However, today the members from this org all wore their letters and we all were now asked by panhel. to all wear letters tomorrow as a show of greek unity on campus.
My question/concern is WHY? I just don't feel like participating in any show of sorority unity bc I'm angry. I hate stupidy and I think this girl was greedy which lead to some stupid actions, like putting sorority items with letters on them in the same location as illegal drugs. For all that my org does to show we are not the stereotypical negative view of a sorority girl, I'm angry that someone else tarnished our image bc her illegal actions and her association with another GLO.
Am I totaly wrong in not wanting to be so unified right now? Any thoughts from anyone else?

Wow, that's a tough situation. I can understand wanting to show Greek unity and showing the media/administration/etc that we're not all part of the negative stereotype. But at the same time, I would almost feel that I was supporting the actions of this girl, which I could NOT do. What do the other members of your chapter have to say??

I think we all feel mixed about the whole thing. We were going to wear letters tomorrow before the whole thing happened for an
I-week event and were more upset when we were first told not to wear them around campus. I think my chapter is split when it comes to showing unity or not by wearing the shirts. I tend to agree with NOT wanting to wear them bc I wouldn't want to draw negative attention to US when we weren't the GLO involved. BUT I hate to hide my affiliation....ohhh delima.
I know I would NOT want to be in the shoes of their chapter president. While there have been various issues on campus w/ greeks in the 4 yrs I've been here, I think everything has been handled internally by the school admin. But this made the news and I wouldn't be surprised if their HQ found out! And the fact that she was the Treasurer and money was involved...that raises a few eyebrows....

I think Panhel's mistake was telling people not to wear letters to begin with. That made it into a "Greek" issue when it is not - it's an issue of one individual in one sorority that acted unwisely.

This is a really bad situation. No matter what happens, it will reflect poorly on greeklife in general and her sorority specifically. I agree with 33girl's point that Panhel helped turn it into a "Greek" issue.
You wrote that they found her with ten pounds of marajuana. That along with the narcotics will result in a long prison sentence if she is found guilty. Of course, it depends on your state's laws, but in NYS that amount of drugs would result in about a decade long prison sentence if convicted.
I question the idea of "greek unity" here. Is the greek community supposed to be united in support of this woman or against this woman or what? Obviously, this situation cannot be ignored. Perhaps another approach is to have a drug and alcohol awareness program involving the entire campus including the greeks.

Greek Unity!? What are you unified about? What does not wearing letters show!?
I say wear them! Show and tell people that YOU are not like that. Now is your only chance to show that this is not the way sororities are on your campus.
Very important here to have good PR! NOT a total lack ofit.

What about ALL GREEKS wearing Their Letters?
Why not do it? Is one person from a Greek Org. make All Greeks look bad! Well of course it reflects upon all Greeks, but why not show what Greeks can do together for the betterment of the Community and School!
Show the people that not all are dope selling, drunken scuzzies who wear Greek Letters!
