NAACP Image Awards Nominations 2002
No image problem for Barbershop at the Image Awards.
The cutting comedy, called out by activist Jesse Jackson because of a certain expletive-undeleted line of dialogue that called out Jesse Jackson, scored five nods as nominations were announced Thursday for the 34th annual NAACP Image Awards.
Brown Sugar, the romantic comedy steeped in hip-hop history, was tops among the movies, earning seven nominations, including one for Outstanding Motion Picture. The film, starring Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan (acting nominees both), will vie for top honors against Barbershop, John Q., and the not-yet-released dramas Antwone Fisher and Drumline.
The Image Awards, honoring film, TV, music and books that promote "positive images of people of color," are scheduled to be presented March 8 in Los Angeles.
Big names who just may stop by to see if they're worthy of trophies include: Denzel Washington, a double nominee for John Q. (Best Actor, Film) and Antwone Fisher (Best Supporting Actor, Film), which he also directed; Halle Berry, a supporting actress contender in the film race for her Bond girl turn in Die Another Day; and Jennifer Lopez, a Best Actress nominee for her upcoming comedy, Maid in Manhattan.
Like Washington, Cedric the Entertainer, Angela Bassett, Charles S. Dutton and Ving Rhames nabbed two nominations each. Cedric the Entertainer, the Barbershop instigator who spouted the offending lines about civil-rights leaders Jackson, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., brought home a Best Supporting Film Actor nod for the controversial role. He also was singled out for his Fox series, Cedric the Entertainer Presents, with a Best Actor in a Comedy Series nomination.
Bassett also scored in film and TV--a nominee for the indie drama Sunshine State (Best Actress), and the CBS biopic, The Rosa Parks Story (Best Actress, TV Movie, Miniseries or Special).
Dutton earned nods for CBS' Without a Trace (Best Supporting Actor, Drama) and Showtime's 10,000 Black Men Named George (Best Actor, TV Movie, Miniseries or Special).
Rhames was a two-timer for FX's Sins of the Father (Best Actor, TV Movie, Miniseries or Special) and the Disney Channel's The Proud Family (Best Supporting Actor, Comedy Series).
Among TV nominees, Showtime's Soul Food spiced things up with seven nominations, tops for a drama series; Fox's The Bernie Mac Show managed six nods, tops for a comedy series.
Other notable TV-land nominees: blaxploitation legend Pam Grier, a Best Supporting Drama Actress hopeful for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit; and, grownup Cosby Show kid Keshia Knight Pulliam, now 23, cited for her work on the UPN kids' special What About Your Friends.
In the music division, soul queens India.Arie and Erykah Badu earned four nominations each, including ones for Outstanding Female Artist.

CED will be hosting the awards this year. Kweisi Mfume received from flack about him hosting but told them Barbershop was not the end all be all in terms of his character's comments about Rosa, MLK and Jesse.

Rosa Parks Won't Attend NAACP Awards
Fri Mar 7, 5:50 PM ET Add Top Stories - AP to My Yahoo!
DETROIT - Civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks will not attend Saturday's NAACP Image Awards because the event's host, Cedric the Entertainer, made jokes about her in the film "Barbershop" that she considered offensive.
In a letter dated Thursday, Elaine Steele, a co-founder of the Rosa & Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development, said the invitation was appreciated but that jokes by Cedric's character in "Barbershop" represent "a sensitive area to us."
"We with many others do not understand the endorsement the NAACP gave to the hurtful jokes in the movie `Barbershop,' about America's civil rights leaders," the letter stated.
Parks, 90, made history in December 1955 when she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., city bus. Her arrest triggered a 381-day boycott of the bus system by blacks and led to court rulings desegregating public transportation nationwide.
"Barbershop," last summer's surprise box-office hit about a barbershop on Chicago's South Side, featured Cedric as an old cantankerous barber.
In the film, Cedric's character says other blacks had refused to give up their seats to whites in the segregated South but that Parks got the credit because she was connected to the NAACP.
He also directs an expletive at the Rev. Jesse Jackson (news - web sites) and jokes about the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s alleged promiscuity.
Kweisi Mfume, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites), said he was disappointed that Parks wouldn't attend, in part because "The Rosa Parks Story" is nominated in the category for outstanding TV movie, miniseries or dramatic special.
"Rosa Parks is a member of our organization, has been long before I was born and will continue to be," Mfume said. "We believe if there is a concern we want to hear it."
Mfume, who has called the uproar over the lines "overblown," noted that immediately following the remarks, Cedric's character is admonished for making them. And while he said they need to be taken in context, he recognized that people have varied opinions on art.
The NAACP has nominated "Barbershop" for outstanding motion picture and Cedric the Entertainer for best supporting actor.
Show-business and NAACP officials from across the country choose the Image Award winners. The 34th annual ceremony is set for Los Angeles at the Universal Amphitheatre, and Fox will broadcast a tape of the program on Thursday.

Denzel Washington Sweeps NAACP Image Awards
Sun Mar 9, 2:22 AM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters to My Yahoo!
By Gina Keating
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Denzel Washington (news) swept the 34th annual NAACP's Image Awards on Saturday with a trifecta for his acting and directing prowess, while the top nominee, "Brown Sugar," was shut out of the awards.
Washington, describing his awards as "an embarrassment of riches," won statuettes for best actor for playing a desperate father in "John Q" and for best supporting actor for his role as a Navy psychiatrist in "Antwone Fisher."
"Antwone Fisher," the film Washington guided from script to screen in his directing debut, captured the show's top prize for best picture. As producer and director, Washington collected the award.
The film "Brown Sugar" garnered eight nominations -- the most for any film -- but ended up empty-handed. The controversial "Barbershop," whose digs at civil rights icons Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. prompted an outcry from some African American groups, also failed to win any of its six nominations.
Parks announced the day before the taping that she would not attend the awards ceremony to protest the film's joke about her famous bus ride by Cedric "The Entertainer," who served as master of ceremonies.
Washington, who last year became the first African American to win an Academy Award for best actor since Sidney Poitier (news) in 1963, and Halle Berry (news), the first black best actress Oscar winner ever, got standing ovations when they appeared to induct director Spike Lee (news) into the Image Award's Hall of Fame.
Lee, whose 16 films include "Do the Right Thing" and "Malcolm X," thanked his late mother for "dragging me to movies and Broadway plays" and his 96-year-old grandmother, a teacher who put him through film school and helped fund his first movie.
"This is a very wonderful moment ... from the very beginning I wanted to build up a body of work ... that's how you judge an artist," Lee said.
Berry picked up a best supporting actress award for her role as sexy secret agent Jinx in the James Bond thriller, "Die Another Day."
"With a movie like 'Bond,' I never thought I could win an award," Berry said. "But I did it (for) black women so people could see past our color and see the women that we are."
TWO AWARDS FOR ANGELA BASSETT
Backstage, Berry said a spin-off movie starring Jinx was in development. "If (the script) is any good, we'll see," she said to questions about reprising the role.
Angela Bassett (news) took home two best actress statuettes for the film "Sunshine State," and for CBS's "The Rosa Parks Story." The other nominees in the film category included Jennifer Lopez (news) in "Maid in Manhattan," Thandie Newton (news) in "The Truth About Charlie," Vivica A. Fox (news) in "Juwanna Man," and Sanaa Lathan (news) in "Brown Sugar."
Tennis champion sisters Venus and Serena Williams (news - web sites) received the President's Award for their sporting accomplishments, joining such previous winners as President Bill Clinton and national security adviser Condoleeza Rice.
"Lethal Weapon" actor Danny Glover (news) received the Chairman's Award for his work to broaden human rights internationally and to abolish the death penalty. In his acceptance speech, Glover admonished the audience "to question, to dissent, to speak truth when the call to patriotism and nationalism are used as barriers to detain us."
"We are in the face of some real dangerous villainy ... that is getting ready to take our rights and set up a system of tyranny and intimidation," Glover said backstage.
Glover was among several actors who used their time at the microphone to voice their opposition to the looming U.S. war with Iraq (news - web sites).
The two-hour telecast of the show airs on March 13 on Fox.

About time Serena lost the blonde. Her coloring just didn't support it.

They won't be showing it here until Midnight because the Fox station airs the State Girls High School Basetball Tourney.

Naw, I ain't bitter. I just want the record to reflect that they should have done their own chit.
When our band performs (nationally or internationally) we don't do things indicative to another band. That's where confusion comes in.
Dat's all!
Go 'head Angela!
Good night!

Oh my goodness...did you see the tribute to Spike Lee? It was tight to me...they had real Greeks (Omega Psi Phi) to step as well a drumline and dancers as well as the guy who sings Doing the Butt. It was tight...
Unfortunately I missed the opener

Is Giancarlos an Omega? He was jumping with the best of them! Maybe he still had that touch from "School Daze." The Spike Lee tribute was beautiful. I LOVE Spike.
