What is THIS?? Part 2

From the Drug Policy Alliance:

***CONGRESS SEEKS TO BAN LIVE MUSIC AND DANCING!!
***COULD HAPPEN THIS YEAR; WE NEED YOUR HELP

Congress is considering two pieces of legislation that could
effectively ban live music and dancing, while throwing innocent people like you in jail. If enacted, either bill could prevent you from hearing your favorite band or DJ live. Every musical style would be affected, including rock and roll, Hip Hop, country, and electronic music. Both bills would allow overzealous prosecutors to send innocent people to jail for the crimes of others. The two bills are the RAVE Act (H.R. 718) and the CLEAN-UP Act (H.R. 834). Both could be passed this year without your help. (Links to the Acts text provided below.)

The RAVE Act would make it easier for the federal government to punish property owners for any drug offense that their customers commit - even if they work hard to stop such offenses. If enacted, nightclub and stadium owners would likely stop holding events - such as rock or Hip Hop concerts - in which even one person might use drugs. Similarly, the CLEAN-UP Act contains provisions that would make it a federal crime - punishable by up to nine years in prison -
to promote "any rave, dance, music or other entertainment event" that might attract some attendees that would use or sell drugs. In both cases, it doesn't matter if the concert promoter and property owner try to prevent people from using drugs. Nor does it matter if the vast majority of people attending the event are law-abiding citizens that want to listen to music, not do drugs.

If either the CLEAN-UP Act or the RAVE Act becomes law, Congress could effectively ban live music and dancing, as well as any other event that might attract someone that would use drugs (essentially any event that draws a large crowd). Your help is needed to stop these bills from becoming law!!! Dancing, singing, and playing music should not be a federal crime!

For more information on the RAVE Act and Drug Policy Alliance's campaign to stop it, see:

Ok sorry this is so long, that was the basic idea of the email I got, but anyway WHAT IS GOING ON???? I feel llike those people in Footloose I know the email might have been a little hysterical (they're not purposely banning music and dancing) but "promoting something that could attract someone who would use drugs" could apply to just about anything.
This bill has been around for a little while, but please if you guys can, email a rep and let them know why this is ridiculous. Because of the bill's broad language, even people hosting a barbeque could get arrested if there was music and someone did marijuana on their property.
A lot of my friends work in the nightclub/promotion industry and are going to lose their jobs if this passes.
Thanks.

I've tried so hard to go against this kind of crap. In 99 in Gainesville when they decided to make a mandatory closing time of bars/clubs because of the supposed drug problem, literally hundreds of students protested at city hall....me being one of them.

The lawmakers ( city council members ) turned it around by saying we just want a place to do drugs. What most people didn't realize is that the law was break through they needed to set up other half a$$ laws that gave even more authority to those who willl abuse it. Laws like the one you posted can apply to any buisness or family gathering, however the deem such an event in their eyes. It sucks....but thats the price we have to pay for living in america.

Here goes our government *again* trying to protect people from themselves. I say that if you're a big enough of a dumbass to go somewhere and o.d. on something then you get what you deserve. Don't make the 99% of us who aren't that stupid suffer for it. I can dig me some live music w/o being f***ed up. It's always that 1% that kills it for the rest of us.

Totally agree. The government does not need to pass laws on people's behavior. There are other means of preventing dangerous activities, like controlling the means of those activities (guns or drugs or promoting preventative measures: birth control or anti-smoking campaigns).
