Post Internet Chapters

I recently made a visit to my sororities internet site, and was looking to see how far the nearest alumni chapter was from me, when I noticed something called 'surfing sisters' under internet. I thought, well, that's the name of the alumni chapters web page. I went to check it out, and it wasn't a web page, but a message board, chatroom, and e-mail. I was amazed! It was an internet alumni chapter! I thought it was great because many sisters live in areas where they are limited to their DZ resources and don't have an alumni group around them. Not only that, but I found a pledge sister of mine that I haven't seen since she graduated. It's the first time we've been in contact in 2 years. I thought I'd share this with you because if your fraternity or sorority doesn't already have one, they are a great idea and you should think about suggesting it to your nationals.

Mikki,

That's a really interesting idea! Is it an actual chapter? Do members pay dues or how does one "join" it?

Thanks for sharing!

I know that Beta Sigma Phi, a non-collegiate service sorority, has Internet chapters. You can check them out at http://www.betasigmaphi.org.

No, the sisters don't pay dues. It acts as a Alumni chapter in a way. The members must be alumni and of course you must be a Delta Zeta. It doesn't follow the normal 'chapter' functions such as dues, meetings, fundraisers etc. etc. However, under nationals it IS considered an Alumni chapter. A place for sisters to talk, get ideas, organize functions, get in touch with sisters, find information, etc etc.

I had surfed onto the Beta Sigma Phi homepage quite by chance a while back, it's awesome what they've accomplished through the web! Mikki, is your internet-alumnae chapter limited in membership to alum from a particular chapter, or is it for anyone who's a DZ alum? Our chapter advisor is a DZ, she might be interested to know about this.

It's for ANY alum equeen! The member number is I believe 170+. It's actually quite cool. I think it's a terrific idea.

Mikki,
Hi! I'm also a Delta Zeta (pledge class 1976, Delta Lambda, Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas). I had not noticed the "surfing sisters" link on the DZ National's webpage the last time I visited there, so I'm so glad that you mentioned it. It looks quite interesting.

Surfing Sisters

Hi all! I'm a member of Surfing Sisters and thought I'd chime in. Actually, we do pay dues of $10 a year. We're recognized by National and have officers just like any other bricks and mortar alumnae chapter. It has been an extremely rewarding experience, as I've met women from all over the country and made some really special bonds. We had a party at Convention and several of us have had random meetings from time to time. You should come check us out! You can participate without paying dues, you just can't take part in the Secret Sister exchanges or other activities.
