Even Latino chapters haze

Fraternity suspended for hazing
Charged with four violations of student code of conduct

NT's chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity, a member of the NT Latino Greek Council, was suspended on Feb. 19 for the rest of the semester.
The suspension is a result of hazing investigations by the university and the fraternity's national headquarters.

"The sanctions were jointly imposed by nationals and the university," said Roddy Wolper, NT director of news and information.

Wolper said the NT and national headquarters investigations ran concurrently and cooperatively.

"We take all incidents of hazing very seriously," Kelly Reese, associate director of news and information, said.

"Fraternities and sororities are generally very mature in working with the university to return to campus."

Reese said the fraternity's charter was not revoked, and that she thought the sanctions were "appropriate."

NT noted four violations of the Code of Student Conduct.

The first involved "physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment." The second was for hazing.

The fraternity was also reprimanded for a "violation of university policies or regulations" and participating in "an act which constitutes a violation of federal, state, civil or criminal laws."

Within the mandated sanctions, almost all the fraternity's activities will stop.

Chapter members now must work with representatives from the national headquarters to learn about the importance of following university and national headquarters' procedures and policies.

They must implement a "new member education program" and present this to the NT administration.

Also, each member of the suspended chapter must complete 30 hours of campus and community service.

They have been asked to work with the assistant dean of students for Greek Life to educate the NT greek community on hazing.

Finally, all chapter members are required to attend a Men Against Violence seminar.

If the chapter makes it through the suspension period without incident, it may petition the university to return to active status.

Upon reactivation, it will start a three-year probation on conduct.

Chapter President Robert Chatman was unable to be reached for comment.

Four of NT's fraternities have been suspended since April 2000.
