TKE Delta-Nu Chapter Help Sponsor Child for Cancer
Maryville, MO) – During the evening of February 10, 2003,
members of the Delta-Nu chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity
collected donations for the 'Angel Face' Foundation, in care of
seven-year old Cheyenne Ackman, daughter of Maryville residents,
Josh and Heather Ackman.
In an attempt by TKE Fraters to collect as many donations as
possible for the little girl, members canvassed residence halls at
Northwest Missouri State University, asking students to give a small
donation in order to help fund Cheyenne's cancer treatments.
"It's great to see that all the residents on campus were so
receptive to fraternity men coming door-to-door, asking them for
donations. We were expecting to receive spare change, and many
students were openly donating close to five to ten dollars," said
Nathan Welch, member of Delta-Nu chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
A rare but extremely serious disorder, Cheyenne was diagnosed with
severe Aplastic Anemia last December. The disease has since shut
down her body's ability to produce blood cells through bone
marrow and is subsequently weakening Cheyenne's entire immune
system. As a result, the only cure is for the little girl to receive
a bone marrow transplant.
Currently at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance in Seattle, WA,
Cheyenne is under the care of some of the nation's leading
doctors in dealing with pediatric Aplastic Anemia. However, the
cost of a bone marrow transplant is enormous.
Because of the extreme financial burden placed upon the Ackman
family, TKE Delta-Nu members decided to take a hands-on approach in
their fundraising efforts by knocking door-to-door throughout
NMSU's residence halls. In just two hours, the members of TKE were
able to raise $850.
"This amount of money would not have been raised so quickly if it
were not for the generosity of the Northwest students," stated Delta-
Nu president, Brent Steffens. "We did not expect to raise that much
money. On behalf of the men of Tau Kappa Epsilon, I would like to
thank all those residents who contributed their spare change. As
you can see, it really added up."
"I am very proud of the efforts of our Fraters. Once again, they
are living the ideals of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity by helping
others," said Stu Umberger, Regional Director for Tau Kappa Epsilon
Fraternity.
