Is This Normal?
Okay, I'm going to Cali over Spring Break. I went to go buy my ticket and I just got nervous.
This is weird because I love flying. It's the best feeling. But since friggin' 9-11, I've been scared of going anywhere on a plane. And even worse, I worry if there's any Arabic-looking people. I know that they have supercharged methods of checking baggages and such. But I am fearful of it all the same.
When I went home over Christmas break, I closed my eyes and started breathing hard and since you can't play music until the plane is in the air. I thought I was going to throw up or something because of not being able to know if I would live to make it to my destination.
And I feel ugly being discriminative over who flies on the plane because I love all people.
Should I seek counseling?

I don't think it sounds abnormal. I use to be afraid of flying and my first official time flying (The first time I had flown I was younger and I don't remember flying with my mom) was the spring break following Sept. 11th. I found my plane ticket on-line for a great price and I could not pass it up. So, I just took deep breaths when I got on the plane. I had window seats and I looked out the window the whole time and felt so relaxed. I hope this is a little encouragement.

No, I don't think that it's weird. Lot's of people are scared to fly, even before 9/11...
I'm not one of them, but the thought does go through my head every time that I get into an airplane, that something may happen.
My main suggestion to you is to just try to be relaxed.
Are you going to be traveling by yourself? If you have someone going with you, then occupy yourself with conversation, or even card games. If you're traveling alone (I've flown by myself all the way to Florida and up to Northern California...) then try to strike up a conversation with the person next to you.
Pay a couple of bucks for headphones, and enjoy the inflight movie.
(I've done this every time I get in a plane...) Look out the window, and try to figure out what state you're flying over. (If you're afraid of heights, I don't recommend this one!)
Basically, if you focus on something else you'll be more relaxed, and your fear will not consume you.
Good luck!
