Janet
I was watching the news this morning and almost feel off the bed when Janet Reno said she was considering running for Governor of Florida. Damn Damn Damn!!!! After all that shit over Ilion(?) I would not even consider giving her my vote if I could. Are things so tough . . . maybe I should move to Florida and put my name in the hat.

Get used to it, Professor. Americans today are like sheep; everybody's wrapped up into their own thing, so the wolves have no problem gettin' us. She knows exactly whose vote and how many she needs to win; otherwise, it wouldn't have even been public knowledge. With pagers, cell phones, and pcs, no one has time to organize effective protests to people and things that present real problems for us as a nation.

I'm still in shock after Marion Barry ran for mayor again after being convicted on drug charges. And he won. I just don't get it. Society is sick.

Chi_ZETABBW,
Your Marion Barry observation was on point. That truly was an embarrassment, but I guess it showed the frustration and desperation of people in Washington, D.C. And also that African Americans are really forgiving people.

As a native Floridian, I would vote for her. Anything is better than Jeb Bush! Would she be elected? Not a chance! With a large number of Cuban American votes coming from the central and southern region and a large number of republican votes coming from the north. What impact is her running going to have? Its hard to say because the Elian situation truly split the state racially and regionally. At least it would make the gubernatorial race an interesting one!

She'd have a chance. There are too many interest groups in the state that have a problem with Jeb Bush, and remember, the Democratic Party is basically waiting for revenge because of the voting fiasco back in November-December.
Here are two articles in regards to the Janet vs. Jeb issue:

I think both of them are poor choices. It would seem to me that the democratic party could do better than Janet! I hated the way she handled the situation with Elian! I would have sent his #%* back to his father with a brown bag lunch instead of wasting my tax dollars to support his cause. It bothers me when folk, especially those that are not even US citizens, receive monies from the US when we don't even support our own people. Think about how many homeless people could have been fed.
Now before anyone says anthing about helping underdeveloped countries and all that, know that I am supportive but still insist we need to enhance opportunities and provide better acesss to services such as medical treatment prior to assisting others.

Granted, she is not the greatest candidate, but looking at four more years of Jeb? C'mon, be for real people.

Are you implying that Janet gave his father money? The US Govt did not cause the crises. It was Cuban Americans.

Specifically, I am saying that in her current position she could have responded in a timely manner and taken a pro-active role. It is my opinion that her lack of leadership in this matter enabled the saga to linger.
I applaud the Cubans-Americans for their advocacy. I wish black folk would come together in times of adversity or cause.

Soror, you know I love ya...but I am mad at your jab at Marion Barry. That daggone B**** set him up! lol...Seriously though, Marion Barry did more for DC a lot of people fail to realiZe. He looked out for kids in the summer programs, senior citiZens, etc...basically he was re-elected because of ALL that he had done for the people of DC, not for his own personal problems which had no affect on his ability to run DC...and I am here to tell you, he's not the ONLY public official to use drugs, he was just one of the only ones to get caught...but they really had it out for him and probably still do...that's why he finally just said, let me retire and put Anthony Williams in my place....oh yeah, I will be the first one to tell you I voted for him to get re-elected...and if he ran again...guess who'd vote for him again
Oh, and as for Janet Reno...she can do her thang...

With Joe Scaraborough's resignation from Congress I say watch out. He might be looking at the governorship of Florida. He is an a** just like Jeb. I know someone disagreed with my analyzation of Janet's chances of winning. I still say her chances are slim. We black folks in Florida (and we are a significant minority in numbers when we look at poll participation -- the numbers with the latest election were the best in ages) we do not want anymore Bush's in Tallahassee. BUT these conservative, republican white people up in here in North Florida nd on the gulf coast love Jeb and Joe Scarborough -- not saying that Joe is gearing up to run -- but knowing him, I know in no way is he gone from the political arena for good. AGAIN, I WOULD VOTE FOR JANET RENO as it stands right at this moment.
However, Janet's chances would be slim when looking to central and south. The Cuban vote is still strong and they tend to vote republican. From my experiences in South Florida -- For the presidential race they shouldn't have been too concerned about hanging chads, they should have been double checking to make sure no dead Cubans or illegals voted (as they did when Xavier Suarez was elected mayor of Miami).

I would take Janet Reno again and again before I'd take one of the Bush brats. I am from North Florida (Scarborough's district) and I would be so happy if Reno was governor instead of Jeb. Unless you are from Florida, you have no idea of how Jeb has f---ed up the state...from eliminating affirmative action programs to promoting offshore drilling, his 4 years will make Florida horrible. Janet Reno, with her REAL interest in the state and environmental isues, will be the only person who can begin to repair the damage Jeb will leave in 2002.
Onenine08, where are you? I'm up here on the Gulf Coast...Republican country. I'm very ashamed to say that my county had the highest percentage of Bush votes...yuck.

Is it any coincidence that BOTH baby Bushs' are promoting OIL DRILLING? Cuz' we all know how the Bush family made (and still makes!) it's fortune!
