Xi Encounter

ok, so I still keep in touch with my middle school band teacher (oh dont even start with the "and this one time, at band camp" jokes...) and i was wearing my bid day shirt and she saw it and was like "oh my god, you're an alpha xi delta??? I'M an alpha xi!" and it was really cool being able to talk to someone outside of my chapter and who isnt an advisor (cuz you all know how much you can't talk to them ) and it was just really neat becuase when i was in middle school and she was my teacher her and i were always really close, especially after a band trip to russia. and now i find out she's my sister! that totally made my day!
ok, so have any of you found out about friends, neighbors, teachers, co-workers, etc. who you were close with or at least knew, and later found out that they were alpha xi delta's too? (haha, that rhymed)

Well... here's my story ....

My mother was an only child and there was only one girl cousin ... however the cousins weren't close because their mothers (sister-in-laws) hardly spoke ...

anyway my mother knew that her cousin had been in a sorority while in college but had no idea of which one and my mother's college didn't have sororities when she was there.

meanwhile my mother becomes an Alpha Xi alumnae Initiate in the late 60s when a chapter is installed on the campus where my father is a professor and then I become an Alpha Xi as well.

So, by now both of their mothers had passed on and the cousins - being all the family either had of their generation - were trying to get back together so my mother's cousin comes to visit us ... I come bouncing down the steps to greet her when she arrives with my Alpha Xi jersy on and she blurts out "you're an Alpha Xi ?!?! so am I !!" She was an initiate of Delta chapter ...

so the cousins turned out to be sisters and it really helped strengthen the bond for them...

I went back to my high school a few years ago, wearing letters. Imagine my surprise when my senior year english teacher gave me the handshake. I about fell over. It was nice to know that there are A Xi D's all over.

Also my husband's cousin is an A Xi D.

Here's mine (or at least one of them)

The summer of the year that I was Chapter President, I was working for my dad's company in North Carolina and had to take a week off to go to convention. There was also a Theta Chi from my school working at the same place and he and I were pretty good friends.

At convention, I was waiting in line to cast a ballot for National Council and the girl in front of me in line said, "Hey, you know [the Theta Chi from my school]." I said yes and she let me know that he had told her to keep an eye out for me and introduce herself to me.

As it turns out, she was the Chapter President of a chapter in the Northeast but her father worked at the same company as mine and SHE was also working there for the summer. Not only that, she was working in an area that was just down the hall from me.

Our chapters were a thousand miles apart, we were working for the same company at the same location, and it took a trip to convention to meet!

She ended up being a Chapter Consultant (now ELC) one year and I became a Chapter Consultant the very next year.

I love these stories!

This should maybe be in the "most unusual places you've seen your letters thread." On Saturday I was at the women's prison with my Girl Scouts Beyond Bars troop, and there was a car in the lot with an AXD sticker on it. It wasn't a prisoner of course, and it wasn't a regular visitor because regular visitors weren't allowed that day. So it was either an employee or another volunteer. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet whoever it was.

I found out after pledging that my aunt is also an Alpha Xi.
That winter when I came home, I found out one of my high school friends' older sister is an AXiD.
As for the oddest place I've seen our letters... Maybe not odd, but when I used to work at Old Navy, of course, I'd see a TON of Greek letters come in. Whenever I saw our letters, I'd be so tempted to talk to the girl. Once in awhile I did, and it was kind of cool.
Apparently my mom (who never joined a sorority) has heard from a number of our neighbors who are AXiDs also. It's pretty crazy.

Pardon me while I crash your board, but I have a cool story about some members of your organization.

I once met an older Alpha Xi Delta alumna member while visiting my dad in San Diego. She works in higher education, like me, and she got to telling stories about her time with the sorority. She told a story about how her daughter, also an Alpha Xi Delta, and son-in-law had moved from California to Texas one year. One weekend, they decided to have a yard sale. A neighbor came walking by and stopped to chat - she was wearing an Alpha Xi Delta sweatshirt. The husband recognized the letters and said "Hey, my wife is in your sorority!" So, he ran inside to go get her so the two ladies could meet. When the daughter came out they chatted about which chapters they belonged to, etc etc. All of a sudden, the neighbor says, "Say, do you know [insert mother's name here]?" The daughter exclaimed, "Yes! She's my mother!!" It turns out that the mother had worked with the neighbor when the mother had been on the HQ executive committee or something. So not only was it a total surprise to find out that her neighbor is in the same sorority, but that the neighbor just happened to know her mom! Talk about it's a small world!!

I had another encounter recently which was just quite odd.

I went out to dinner with a friend, and because it was drizzling outside, I had on my A Xi D windbreaker. Imagine my surprise when the hostess at the restaurant told me she was an A Xi D too! We didn't get to talk much (it was a busy night at the restaurant), but it was neat.

And now that I've moved to NY, I need to wear letters more often. I gotta find me some sisters to hang out with!
