On Wednesday May 2, 2001 participating Baskin-Robbins ice cream
stores across the United States will give away a free scoop of ice
cream to anyone visiting between 6 and 10 pm. To sweeten the deal,
Baskin-Robbins will make a donation to First Book, a national
nonprofit organization that provides free books to low-income
children, for every scoop given away.
Last year First Book distributed more than 4 million books to
hundreds of thousands of low-income children and families in more
than 290 communities nationwide.
In each of these communities First Book Local Advisory Boards
provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in
existing tutoring, mentoring, and family literacy programs based in
Head Start centers, shelters for battered and abused children,
housing project initiatives, soup kitchens, after-school groups, and
other community-based programs reaching low-income children.
If, for example, a family literacy program in Boston served 30
children, that program could apply to First Book-Boston for a book
grant of thirty books each month for a year. With the support of
First Book, these programs are able--often for the first time--to
develop curriculum around the books they select, share these books
with the children they work with, and enable these children to share
the magic of their new books with siblings and other family members
at home.
On May 2nd Baskin-Robbins stores around the country expect to give
away 200 scoops of ice cream per second, so be sure to forward this
message to others in your address book. . . and remember that each
additional scoop given away will result in an even larger donation
to First Book! For more information on Free Scoop Night, or to find
