Greek Week

So I'm curious as to how many colleges celebrate being Greek like we do in which it is so called Greek Week. If you do, I am looking for things that you do during that week. Events, speakers, community service, really anything. I really want to change our Greek Week around to better promote Greek Unity and to get the Campus more involved.

We already participate in Lip Sync, Banners and Serenades, Greek God and Goddess, and other little events but I'm looking for more ideas. So if you have ideas, send them my way!!!

Also, who is attending MGCA in February??? Any one attending UIFI THIS summer? If so, what session? I'm kind of new to this site, so hope I can get to know some of you. I'm a Delt Sig from Michigan and likes to meet new people so give me a shout out!

It was great last year. Every fraternity got paired with a sorority (one fraternity didn't participate) we were paired with Sigma Kappa. Now we're going to be paired with random groups at random events.. I liked it better last year but there are an odd # of groups now.. 5 sororities vs 1 fraternity. PHC should expand soon though.

Greek Week at my school is a big hardcore athletic competition. However, there's been talk of adding a philanthropy, and I think that's a great idea. It's pretty insane and it gets a little overcompetitive unfortunately.

Here's all the things we do: Skits, Doug Englar Relay, Track and Field, Soccer Shoot, Basketball, Racquetball, Bowling, Ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee Golf, Volleyball (beach and indoor).

We had Greek Games, Lip Sync, and Banner.
We did Greek King and Queen but each house had a couple and they won by having the most money put into their jar at Greek Week activities. Then we donated to a local charity.

We also had Yell like Hell where we went to the center of campus and each group got to put 12 people on stage and do a cheer.

We also had our Greek Awards during the week.

And everyone did "Into the Streets" where we were sent out in the community to clean playgrounds, help elderly people with home maintenance, etc. They split up the different houses so there were a few people from a couple different orgs at each site.

Question: what is Banner?

We don't do much anymore. Great Lakes Party by Sig Chi, Spring Day (We have NO classes), ususally bowling and then knowledge bowl. They got rid of the talent show cause no one would do anything. Our system is kinda getting weak

Iowa State Greek Week

We traditionally have Greek Week every Sping semester, right after VEISHEA (Iowa State Celebration). Click here for the complete rules/events of Greek Week.

But generally, our Greek Week consists:
- Spring Blood Drive
- Community Service
- Lip Sync
- Greek Olympics (one full day of doing silly things: Pyramid Buildings, Skin-the-Snake, Bed Race, Produce Relays, etc)
- Polar Bear Plunge (benefit for Special Olympics of Iowa)
- Greek Spirit day (show up to get free food at Central Campus, wearing your letters)
- VESPERS (Awards Night for individual chapters)

that's all I could think of right now, if you need more detailed information, you can pm me.

This year, we are paired up with the men of FarmHouse and the ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta, and I am one of the co-chair of my house. Last year I was in the Central, so I know the rules by heart!

It's a competition to see which house can make the best banner for the week. Usually made with a flat bed sheet and paint...Here at Nebraska it is a part of a lot of competitions on campus - Homecoming, Anchor Splash, Greek Week. For the sororities they make banners all the time for different things like Dad's Day, Parent's weekend, Founding Days, as well as part of the competitions for things like Derby Days (Sigma Chi), Paddy Murphy (SAE), Idol (Farmhouse), Hurricane (AGS). I've also seen them on sororities to welcome their traveling consultants.

The most creative banners are usually for homecoming b/c the theme is more concrete and you can use the banner to go along with your lawn display.

As for Greek Week at Nebraska...it's not a very big thing here. They don't announce best chapter or anything like that, there's no all greek philanthropy or really much of anything. The one thing I remember most about Greek Week from last year was that the Monday of Greek Week was the warmest day of Spring Semester and there was the all greek barbeque and all the girls broke out the tank tops and shorts...the scenery was very nice after months of everyone in heavy coats and sweatshirts!
