A friend of mine use to have a scanner (they're legal because people use them at car racing events to hear what the drivers are saying in the pit). One night, we sat out on his balcony with his scanner and started picking up different portable phone conversations from around his neighborhood. Interesting stuff. Especially when we started picking up a conversation where someone was having phone sex. It was even grosser when we realized that it was my friend's roommate!
Scanners are actually quite popular. Some people make a hobby out of sitting out of their porch and picking up portable phone conversations (which why they say to never give your credit card number over a portable phone).

Scary on the scanners thing.
Here's a question a friend and I were pondering last night: If everyone complains about having to listen to other people's cell phone calls in public spaces and getting stuck behind someone swerving on the highway because they're on the phone, why do so many people still do it? Is it like how Celine Dion sells millions of cd's but you'll never meet someone who admits they own one?

Scanners are legal and MOST of them have cell phone frequencies blocked. Besides I don't really know anyone that still uses an analog cell phone. All the new digital ones are either on unreachable frequencies for the scanners or would be unintelligible due to the digital signal (or both). Not to say that someone couldn't illegally alter a scanner to get those things.

I can't stand when people talk on their cell phones so loudly that you can hear them. I spent over an hours on a train listening to this woman talk all about her job and her weekend plans. When she finally stopped talking, we all applauded.

No, I was on the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) from NYC to the Hamptons which is a two hour trip. It's much nicer than the subway. It's like a regular train like Amtrack. Anyway, the chick was talking so much and so loudly that everyone in this car knew her life story and her entire itinerary for the weekend. So annoying!
