Sorority Action For Education (SAFE)
Twenty-six women’s fraternities unite to educate about dangers of club drug use
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - January 14, 2003 –

This month, the Panhellenic Drug Education Consortium will release a complete interactive program to educate sorority women about the dangers of club drug use. The SAFE project has been created though a cooperative effort between representatives from the 26-inter/national women’s groups. It is the hope that SAFE will assist in giving undergraduate women knowledge and skills to avoid high-risk situations and make responsible choices regarding drug use.

News headlines in the last year have warned the public about an increase in the prevalence of club drugs, so named because of their original appearance in dance clubs and all night parties called raves. Although ecstasy seems to be the most popular of the club drugs, others such as ketamine and GHB all come with physical, emotional and psychological risks.

“The SAFE program is a cutting-edge resource for everyone from graduate assistants to chapter advisors to support drug education in an interactive and informative way! It provides an opportunity for women to come together to discuss an issue that is relevant to all of them and to design activities that are safe and drug-free. The SAFE project could be a wonderful opportunity to sponsor a Panhellenic program for all female students. The format makes it engaging and user-friendly for professionals and students alike,” says Kathy Salvemini, Chairman of the Panhellenic Drug Education Consortium.

SAFE contains an educational video, workshop materials and a facilitator’s guide. The video presents three personal testimonials of women who have experienced the negative effects of ecstasy, GHB and/or ketamine. It also includes research and factual information on ecstasy, ketamine and combined drug use and abuse.

Each campus having a College Panhellenic will receive a copy of SAFE to be kept on file with the Greek Life Office for chapter or College Panhellenic use.

“The SAFE program tackles some issues that all college women should be aware of. I look forward to promoting this program to educate all sorority women on my campus of the risks involved and the ways to prevent situations of this nature,” said Megan Leonard, Panhellenic President, East Carolina University.
