Laid Off

Well, Gray Davis emposed budget cuts on California's education system, meaning two things for me:

1) There will be a supplemental fee in the middle of the semester for my tuition. (Thank God financial aid adjusted my award so it'll pay for itself.)

2) The San Diego Unified School District, where I work, had to lay off A LOT of its workers. First on the list: College Hourly Custodians. Bye bye 11.40 an hour, bye bye 1000+$ a month for rent and dues and everything else.

I can live two monthes without a job, but I want one. I don't want to go on unemployment because I don't want to get handed a check for doing absolutly nothing. Well, I'm going to make it through, but it's going to be hard.

Just wish me luck on job hunting and getting through all this. I WILL, but I could use all the encouragement I can get.

Oh yeah, AND VOTE REPUBLICAN!

Oh, Stan, you had me right there with you until you said "vote republican."

But I do wish you luck. It's clear that you are a smart, cool person and I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding a job -- but of course we're all sending good vibes your way. Keep us updated!

In the meantime, have some drinks!

Sucks being on 'the dole' (as our cousins across the pond call unemployment compensation) but it's at least something to tide you over until you can find work again. Been there, done that... and you don't even get a stupid T-shirt.

Hang in there... I'm sure you'll find something before long.

I like that in your sig -- "on the eighth day, God created beer!"

Hopfen und Malz, Gott erhälts -- Hops and [barley] malt, [the rest] God provides!

Heh, when I was in Cali, I voted republican, but now that I'm in NC, I hate them.

Weird?

Anyhow, sorry to hear about your misfortunes man. Hope everything works out.

Been laid off before and it isn't a good feeling. Hang in there and good luck finding a new job.

Stan, hang in man, it is tough and getting tougher.

I feel the same way as you do about getting unemployment. Went once and made me feel like dirt!

Said Screw you!

Not easy, but found out today, Mo. has the highest % of lay offs of any state.

Hell, lets have a war to get out of economic problems!

Keep up the stiff upper lip and good luck!

Politically wise, while I am a regis. Rep. was Regis Dem. Hell the ass wholes are all the same no mater what name!

What is in it for me and screw my electorate, I have a job in W D C!

Stan,

I was laid off last year and I know how you feel. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find something soon. Hang in there.

Both of my sisters have lost their jobs in the last few weeks. It's going to be rough for a while here in NYC.

Good luck to you.

I'm so sorry.

I was laid off myself a few months ago. I did go on unemployment - it's not really a handout, it's meant to tide you over until you find work (and you do have to be actively seeking work, not just sitting on your butt) - but, yes, they did treat me like dirt, and they use any excuse to put a stop on your check. At least in Connecticut you can file by phone.

Good luck in your job hunt.

And VOTE DEMOCRAT

I work for the Workforce Commission here so I know all those rules like the back of my hand. The rules were put in place to keep people from staying on welfare for life. It helps prevent this from happening, but it does affect the people who actually need help.

Workforce Commission (there's one in every state although the commissions are referred to by different names in every one) operate One-Stop Centers. These centers are for people who don't require any welfare help (ie. food stamps, unemployment, welfare, etc) but just need help getting into the workforce. They're like headhunters, but for free. They'll help you with skills like creating a resume and interview skills. Some may even be able to offer you some supportive services money like help with transportation or child care. They also should have access to a statewide database of jobs, many of which never get listed anywhere else. To find the closest one to you, look in the phone book under Workforce in the government section or go to this website http://www.servicelocator.org/ to find the closest One-Stop center to you. This is a national site, so you can find one in any state.

Unhappy

I'm sorry, Stan. That really does stink. It seems like school districts all over are hurting. My district is already looking at cutting programs and personnel for next year. Art and music in elementary schools may go. Custodial staff may be cut - and that really is bad because my school's 3 custodians are overworked as it is! My job is not in jeopardy, but I may lose my library clerk, who I only get 1 day a week as it is. Hope our Legislature gets on the stick and gets us some decent funding.
Good luck - I hope you find something.

All part of the Government's plan to have children stop thinking for themselves and turn them into mindless clones who only statistics and facts but will lack the creativity to do anything outside of the basic 3 Rs.

It's like Mr Hollands Opus. "If you cut music and art, there will be nothing left to write in those history books 50 yrs from now."

Ah well, I still think kids should be more well rounded, and learn some kind of performing art outside of their normal education.

Anyways, thanks for the support guys, when something new comes up I'll let you all know.
