I get made fun of for asking people this question, but I think it's a good one, although just a tiny bit cheesy. Once I ask the question, I look as much to the person's reaction to it as I do to the answer. If you freeze up because you think it's a weird question, I probably won't like you very much.

I just try to relate conversation to the situation... using small-talk mostly. Examples...

At the campus bookstore: "How long have you been waiting in line?"

In class: "Did you understand a word that professor just said?" or "What topic did you write your paper about?"

In a cafeteria: "Can you believe how over-priced this food is?"

and so on... then I'd keep discussing things & ask questions like what year they are, their major, if they live on/off campus, if they're in any student organizations, what high school they went to, etc.

You wouldn't believe how many times asking simple questions like those I've found that a complete stranger & I have mutual friends or something really significant in common!

Suprisingly, I took this totally innocently. I'm usually the first one to think anything is dirty!
