Does A Phi have the equivalent of a sweetheart?
While we were painting the house to get ready for rush today, we were thinking about this because there are a few guys that have done some great things for our chapter over the past few years. In the past, we've usually thanked them by making them our Homecoming King (organizations compete against each other and each org. picks a king and queen for Court). Either that our we've made them our "Big Man on Campus" contestants.
I know I read in the Quarterly about how the Alpha chapter said we should not let fraternity men (or men in general) wear our pins. But I was wondering if we had some sort of program set up so we could recognize those men more formally for being such great guys and helping out Phis. Our chapter is still fairly new (only 12 years old), so we don't know a lot of the traditions that larger and older chapters have. I want to make sure we don't lose many other traditions, but I thought this was one I could ask about on here instead of asking some of our alumni.

At our Fall formal, we recognize men who have helped Alpha Phi through out the year. They get an award called the "Bordeaux Beau." It is a fun tradition. It usually ends up going to an Alpha Phi's boyfriend.

Heart Throb
My chapter had a "heart throb," ususally a fraternity man, that was announced at the spring formal each year. The chapter voted on this at a meeting earlier in the semester and it was kept a secret until our formal.
We usually recognized him with a sweatshirt or some small gift. It was a fun tradition and a good way to recognize men who are supportive of the chapter.
AOE,
Lori

You should talk to your chapter advisor and your region's OPC about way to fashion a "Bordeaux Beau" program within the rules of Alpha Phi. There are certain rules that you should follow, for example, it is important that they NOT be on the composite, because then it looks like they are members of our fraternity, which they are not.
Your advisor and your regional team can help you do something fun and special within the rules.

Hello. I know its hard to imagine but such programs could endanger the Fraternity's single-sex organization status, something I am sure no chapter would want to do.

Yeah, that's why I was checking, because I wanted to make sure we didn't break any rules with IHQ.

The "Bordeaux Beau" does not go on the composite or anything. It is just a way of thanking him for helping us out that year. We don't even give them anything, except for a teddy bear. It would be just the same as recognizing an Alpha Phi's mother or father for helping us out.

I agree with DawnAPhi, the Bordeaux Beau is just an award given to the fraternity guy who has stood out from all the rest in helping us out and supporting us. They do not show up on the composite. They usually are recognized in front of the whole chapter or even in front of the whole greek system, and we give him a gift. Our Bordeaux Beau gets a certificate as well as a sash, that he wears throughout the night.

LOL!
......and yet again another good reason we don't participate in sweetheart programs too!
This is getting awfully funny. I've never seen a house put their dog on a composite!

I think it's funny too. Chi Phi has put both of their dogs on it for as long as they had them. They just had one of them put down because he was old--> he couldn't see or walk very well. I don't know of any other fraternities that do that or have done that though.

Our local Pike chapter used to put their dogs on the composite, but they haven't had dogs for awhile.
The fraternity I was talking about earlier is at UIUC.

Theta Chi at our school put their dog on thier composite. When I was rushing & now I never understood why the dog would be put right in the middle of their composite.
