Things you *shouldn't* be afraid of...but are
OK, so we've had the discussion about what we're afraid of. Now what are some things that you really should not be afraid of, but for some reason you are? You know, the sorts of things that people make fun of you for.
Oh, mine are the dark and dolls.

I dislike escilators too Killarny! I have to have ahold of the rail or else I panic and feel like I'm going to fall backwards. It's especially worse when I have to hold onto my lunch and soda and don't have a free hand to use! I should really just start using the elevator!

The edge of the subway platform. I nearly have a heart attck whenever I see anyone approach the yellow area. It's a realistic fear, but I am phobic about it.

Escalators - when I was a kid I had this irrational fear that my parents would have me get on first and then leave me. The law school has an escalator and I still am worried about having to use it. I'm also afraid of falling down.
I'm afraid that I'll gain a lot of weight and end up one of the anonymous, faceless stomachs on the evening news...y'know how they always have shots of people's midsections when they're doing reports on obesity...I'm afraid of ending up like that...

elevators----i am scared i will get trapped in one for a long period of time--and the phone won't work. ----when i was in jr high i was a volunteer at the local hospital, a friend and i had to push the food cart upstairs--the elevator stopped for only about a minute--but yikes--trapped in an elevator with a cart of stinky hospital food!!!

I can't sleep if my closet door is open or if the closet light is on. I've had this fear since I was like 3.

I can't sleep at home when the front door is unlocked. It's kind of strange, I really doubt that anyone woul want to break into my home or anything, but it's something that I am just scared of.

Ditto on elevators, but for me it's ANY small, closed in space. I get made fun of by the Sheriffs at work because I need one of them to stay in the holding cell area with me when I'm talking to clients in lock up -- and it's true that it makes no sense to have a claustrophobic defense attorney. That could be a really bad sit-com.
I also get made fun of because I'm afraid of the vocorder (sp) -- you know, that thing that some singers use that makes their voices sound all computerized (like Cher's awful "Believe" song). That freaks me out every time I hear it. *shivers*

I am deathly afraid of measuring tapes, the kind in those big metal cases that you can push a button and they will retract. The ones that close up so quickyl scare me to death, I'm always think I'm gonna get my hand cut off or something. I don't even know if anyone knows what I'm talking about but??
Other things I am afraid of are elevators and the phone/doorbell ringing. I HATE WHEN THE PHONE RINGS, I can't physically make myself answer it. I wait until someone else picks it up and gives it to me or else I'll let the person calling hang up and then I'll call 'em back. It's such a weird fear, and if the doorbell rings, I can't answer it either. Strange!

i am scared that i suck at all sports...so i don't play them.
i used to play soccer, baseball, and basketball when i was a kid...but when i went through that awkward phase when i was younger, i became very introverted and scared someone would make fun of me for not being good.
so now i do not participate in anything but family ski trips in tahoe. i used to like playing sports for fun...just fucking around with my friends.
the only time you will see me in any sport with my fraternity bro's is when i used to play drunken basketball at the old house (we used to have a basketball court...but we done at our new house).

small heights: i survive parasailing and airplane rides but for some reason cannot get on a step-stool or chair to reach something high on a self without shaking.
going down on escalators: i have to wait for the perfect moment to go down an escalator. going up is fine.
fainting/passing out: i black out for at least 10 minutes prior to fainting. I always wonder what happened during that time... and the headaches afterward are not fun either. I guess when i was younger i walked out of my room and into my living room and had a diabetic reaction and fell on my brick fireplace. i don't remember walking out of my room or hitting my head. it's weird.
needles: i can give my self shots but cannot watch other people (tv/in person/whatever) get a shot.

I have that one too... And it's really sad cuz even holding babies makes me nervous because I'm afraid they're going to spit up on me! Hopefully I'll get over this when I have my own kids someday...
