Disappointed and Outraged

I too attended the national convention in New Orleans. I was disappointed and a bit out raged to see so many brothers DRINKING with their letters on. We are a dry frat and everyone knows the rules, they should not change because of the city we are in.

oh so you were the one with the drinking problem...heard alot about that. Did we just re-enter prohibition or some ish? Cause I was a drinking a@@ !! IS that such an big issue?

While I personally choose not to drink in letters and think you should act respectfully as a representative of Alpha Phi Omega, we are NOT a nationally dry fraternity. Did we vote to change that at Nationals?

I was a voting delegate and the drinking rules WERE NOT CHANGED. We are still dry.

EGD might be referring to convention rules on drinking (which I'm not clear on)....

but still last i checked convention rules on drinking only pertained to convention events. So it still would only matter if that were the case. Someone just doesnt seem to have a clear understanding on the fraternity's standpoint on alcohol...and it aint me.

Alright...let me say this...aside from my previous posting (how proud I am to be apart of APO), I must say that I agree with EGDeepher. I actually saw brothers in their letters "flashing" people off of balconies and throwing "APO Nat'l" beads at pedestrians below.

The point is this...there is no problem with drinking and having fun...as long as you do it in a matter that doesn't disrespect you or the organization you represent. It's one thing to have on your letters while drinking a little drink and enjoying yourself...but to be wearing your letters while drinking and starting fights or flashing people or getting arresting for doing something you had no business doing (which I did see by the way), is a whole nother story.

Regardless of what you do, you want others to look at the Brothers of APO and say good things about us or want to become members for good reasons...you DO NOT want people to see us doing things that makes our fraternity look bad in any way, shape, or form.

So my standpoint on the whole matter? I attended the conference, did some drinking, and had the time of my life! But I did it while showing respect for my fraternity and my fellow brothers...WHICH WE ALL SHOULD DO...NO MATTER WHAT THE RULES SAY!!!

Our Risk Management Policies state that alcohol shall not be used in conjuction with rush and/or pledge education events, and that alcohol use shall also be within the guidelines of local, state, and institutional policy.

As for Convention, there are standing rules passed by the delegates before the legislative session begins. Basically, those rules, as they relate to alcohol, mean that no alcohol shall be consumed as part of the official/scheduled events of the Convention. In other words, the standing rules say that a delegate can't bring a thermos full of bloody marys on the floor. However, it is well known that much drinking occurs in rooms and in this year's case, on the streets during Convention.

Individual chapters may be dry, but as a whole, we are not a dry fraternity.

Individual chapters may have rules on wearing letters or pins while drinking, but the National Fraternity does not.

Wow. So the National Fraternity doesn't have any problems with brothers wearing their letters while drinking and getting arrested and acting out in public (due to alcohol consumption)...good to know...
