Fake sororities

So I know some girls who go to a different school than me who seem to think it's funny to "play" sorority. By this I mean that they took a bunch of greek letters, threw them together, and tell everyone they are in a sorority. Yes...it's immature and I don't talk to them anymore.

I approached them and told them that I really didn't like what they were doing, and they got really defensive.

Do they not understand what being in a sorority stands for???

I am very annoyed.

My freshmen year (this was before I was greek...I went SAI that spring), me and three friends were walking by the dorm where all the sorority chalking was(it was around time for big/lil week for them), and we talked about how funny it would be to write fake, retarded stuff about a sorority that didn't exist all over campus.

We bought loads and loads of sidewalk chalk and started our mission. Our "sorority" was called Phi Mu Sigma (PMS!! HAHA!) and our colors were terd brown and orange. Our mascot was the jackelope. We went to where the sorority chalking was and wrote stuff like, "Gertrude, your big sis loves you!! --YBS in PMS" and "Yolanda is the BEST LIL SIS EVER!!!" And "Bertha, PMS loves you!!". We went ALL OVER CAMPUS, and wrote our letters EVERYWHERE. We mimicked stuff on the side walks. Right next to one that said, "Kappa Alpha Beach Bash, Saturday Night" we wrote, "Phi Mu Sigma Trash Bash, Meet us At the Dumpsters Saturday Night" and really DUMB stuff like that. It was quite fun...

It was even MORE fun when, all that week, some people were dumb enough to think it was a real sorority! People in my classes were like, "I didn't know we had a sorority called Phi Mu Sigma here! What kind of sorority is it?" HA!

Greek Chatters, please don't take offense to us doing this; we honestly were not making fun of Greeks at all because at that point I had already decided to go Greek the next semester. It was just for fun.

One of my friends attended a small college with only locals at that time, and she and her friends invented Tau Mu Alpha - Trouble Makers Anonymous. They put up spirit signs all over campus, things like "TMA says Go Rams."Most people thought it was a "real" sorority.
Their dues were 69 cents!

My friends at Carroll College have a "fake" sorority called Sigma Bunny Upsilon...they all bought rhinestone playboy bunny pins and when they were "pledging" they wore a shirt and tie to class once a week - they are all hilarious girls who probably would have joined a sorority if they weren't so happy with the chapters there. I'm a honorary Bunny, and they promised not to renounce my membership when I joined Gamma Phi...I would be offended if they had bad intentions, but it's all in good fun.

Right, well, I can't believe I'm admitting this, but...when I was a freshman, my roommate and I used to make fun of all the new pledges running around with their lettered tote bags slung over their shoulders (hey, I didn't realize how handy they are 'til I pledged myself), and we jokingly said that we would make our own tote bags with mathematical equations that contained Greek letters on them. Of course, we never did it 'cause that would have been a waste of good material, but nevertheless, it was good for a laugh.

My ex-fiancee and his friends created Kappa Omicron Chi for fun and had jackets and stuff made up for it. It didn't last very long, but they were all guys who'd pledged Kappa Sig and TKE with my ex and had dropped for whatever reason.

Oh well, I wouldn't let it bother me really.

I've posted about this many times, but Phi Mu dropouts created Kappa Omega Chi... KOX... They got approved by the school and even some funding.

Freshman year, a few of the dorm girls and I created our own sorority... Dor Hi Phi. It came up one night in a very greek bar - guys kept coming up to us, talking, and then eventually asking what sorority we were in. When we said we weren't in one, they would walk away and not give us a second look. After this happened a couple of times, we started answering "Dor Hi Phi" - and they would be like "Oh really, how do you like it?" and continue the conversation - regardless of the fact that Dor and Hi aren't Greek letters! Some people...

Dor Hi Phi never really went anywhere after that - but it was fun to talk about, and no... we really didn't understand what being in a sorority was all about. I was the only member of Dor Hi Phi that joined a sorority, and I wasn't convinced to do that until spring of my sophomore year.

I don't see any reason to be annoyed - they're just having fun. They obviously have a connection, and are trying to show that - just like you have a connection with your sisters. They probably don't like the Greek system, or simply don't know enough about it to be interested, and thought it would be funny... not a big deal. Unless they're going around doing something to hurt other sororities or Greek life, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

My first semester I totally knocked being greek. I always said I didn't need to buy my friends and every slam in the book. So a bunch of girls on my floor created out own sorority, we were the HOS. We figured we could sorirty bash even better as a united bunch of HOS *lol* Now I look back and wonder how I could be so mean? Second semester came around, and we all went to information night about spring rush and brought back any information we could think of. My new best friend at college was also a member of AOTT and kept asking me to come by the house for rush and she said I would love them, etc. So I decided to learn more about being greek and I went through rush, although I didn't end up in any of the greek sororities that extended a bid to me.

My biological sister and two of her friends created Alpha Delta Alpha, which stands for "Alexandra, Debbie, and Ana." (Originally, they were the Alpha Alkies) They went out and bought a whole bunch of stuff and are going to make letter shirts, bags, etc. I disagree with what they are doing, but it's their deal. My sister asked me to borrow my "A" (Alpha) cut-out to help them with their letters and I said no! Their sorority, their deal.

Now taking all this into account, I wonder if women in other sororities when AOIIs Founders got together to make AOII thought that we were a "fake" fraternity. Kinda makes you wonder, doesn't it?

This is actually a pretty funny topic... A few of my girlfriends and I make an annual trip to Vegas and our first year there, we were making fun of the hotel named the Westward Ho. They started calling me a Westward Ho because Ho is my last name. We started calling each other that and one drunken night, we said we should all form a group and call it the Westward Hos (WHO for short). There were six of us at the time and we even made up nicknames and our symbol is a martini glass.

The second year we went, it was the original six plus two more girls who we were going to "initiate" in WHO. We each gave them a task to do and we each had to pick something funny that happened to us the first time we were there. For example, I met a Marine and he proposed to me after talking for 20 minutes, so my task was to have one of the new girls pretend to be a bachelorette complete with veil. (Hey, we got in free to a bunch of clubs! )

It's really funny because seven of us are sorority sisters and the other girl is a Phi Sig from our school. We get together every year to go to Vegas and we just had our annual Christams Dinner. It's nice because we are all spread out since we graduated from school and it's a fun way to keep in touch. We even have colors and a motto "Dare to be Remarkable".

i have heard many Greeks say "Greek life isn't for everyone" and it's true.. if their fake sororities make them feel at home, I say go for it But that's just my opinion :P

Somehow I doubt that people thought that about AOII. Most Greeks can see the difference between the formation of a joke sorority and new but sincere one. First clue: Their name is PMS, HOES, or something you don't want to be teased with for the next 100 years.

That's not what I meant Fuzzie Alum. I was speaking more of the formation of new organizations in general. Reading some of the other posts it didn't seem as if the "real" greeks could tell the difference anyhow.

I gotcha. I'd like to think those ignorant Greeks are the exception rather than the rule, though. At least I hope they are.
