isn't it funny?

Does anyone eles find it funny how in this country we would rather talk about J. Lo and Ben Affleck than issues that really affect our country and our world. This is just an example. But do these things really have any effect on our lives. Just maybe this is why eastern( and middle eastern) cultures think that we are a wasted and obliverant society caught up in things that in reality are not really important. There are people starving and homeless but yet we would rather consume ourselves with things that have no intrinsical value..Just a thought....and yes I am a conspiracy theorist...or atleast becoming one

So in a sense because we have the technology to communicate that makes us a wasted country? I understand your point to some degree but at the same time it's all a part of communication. We are a society that lives with information at the tip of our fingers. THAT is why we are able to discuss such things (frivilous or not). I should think that is a great thing that makes us strong. And we're not the only countries to have this ability.

By the way, you asked if their engagement (as an example) really affect us. In fact I'd say it does. I work in jewelry and I have had more requests for colored diamonds lately than I ever have (J Lo has a Pink Diamond). So just an example where it can affect us

IT JUST UPSETS ME WHAT WE ARE COMMUNICATING ABOUT...IM ALL ABOUT SHOOTING THE SH*T BUT THERE ARE ARE PLENTY OF IMPORTANT ISSUES OUT THERE THAT WE CONTINUE TO FORGET ABOUT BECAUSE IT DOESN'T DIRECTLY EFFECT OUR LIVES.

Unhappy I guess you have a point, but....

SAE1955, you have a very valid point here. I agree we must all do our parts to help save the world.

I think a lot of us do though. I volunteered for 2 hours playing with underpriviledged kids today (I had to cut back on hours b/c of finals), and I am sure I am not in the minority here.
That being said, I like talking about J-Lo, reading Maxim and Cosmo and posting about Kate Spade bags.

I will be the first to admit that I would rather pick up Glamour magazine than U.S. News and World Report. The news is depressing. The world can be a sad and unhappy place. So, for me, talking about the new boots I want to buy is something that I would rather talk about than sad things. That doesn't mean I am not doing my part to help or that I don't care.

You sound pretty upset about this topic, and justifiably so.....but being mean isn't going to help communication. How about this, what do you think we should do?

I was just thinking about this yesterday, what do you think has more clout over American society, Washington D.C. or Hollywood?

That's uncalled for.
Her point actually helps back up your original point about how much Hollywood has an influence on our lives over things like the Middle East, etc (yeah, everyone's still out there chugging oil in their SUV's).

A lot of us now are going to think you're the dumbass for your rudeness and immaturity.

I think it's a sign of a lack of a certain type of intelligence. I know that when I hear about a "J. Lo/Ben Affleck" type of thing, I don't really listen. But, I can't even tell you what the Israeli/Palestinian conflicts are actually about because it's not discussed with as much gusto!

Sure, it can be seen as "harmless fun", but I think what really causes other countries to hate us is our lack of interest in THEIR interests...

Not many Americans could tell you who the leaders of many other ocuntries are! And that's the real shame. We are a very selfish, self involved country. Sometimes, I don't balme other countries for not liking us....We need to take our heads out of our asses and acknowledge that we aren't any better off morally or spiritually than a country like Ghana or Sri Lanka!

maybe we don't discuss those issues on here, but thousands of people argue about those issues every day. i've gotten into long discussions about our country's issues with my friends. maybe you don't know a lot of people interestied in politics and world affairs, but i know quite a few. yes, we do like to discuss hollywood relationships, movies, and fashion, but could you imagine the world if all we talked about was war, greed, corruption, mistrust, and hatred. we ned the frivilous stuff to talk about to make sure our society doesn't have to be depressed all the time.
