question about formal recruitment and refreshments

ok. does this sound crazy to you? our greek advisor and panhel vp of recruitment programming, when asked about what types of refreshments we could have 2nd round, responded that they didnt' think we could have any, on 1st nite or 2nd! (we have no frills rush, but this is first off wrong, i think, and second, it's absurd)

now i KNOW that we had ice water teas first nite and punch second in the past cause we have records of what we did... they are saying that we aren't allowed to have anything at all, and that there will be water for pnm's downstairs between rounds, and we can have water bottles in between rounds... call me crazy but this isn't REALLY a rule, is it? it hasn't been that way in the past, and i think the fact that the g.a. never really thought about that in the past, and the vp rp only went through formal recruitment once (she pledged through informal) as a sister means she didn't ever notice that.... and they just kinda improvised when asked and said there wasn't anything!

i just want to get an affirmation that i'm not crazy here... we're on break now and hadn't heard from our recruitment advisor before we left as far as i know. can you imagine not being allowed to have water or anything the first and second rounds????? granted it's a small recruitment compared to big schools but still!

I've never heard this, other than ice-water teas. I guess it depends on things that happened in the past recruitment that you didn't know about (like, if one chapter went way over budget in decoration and refreshment, or if another's national provided all of that stuff), and they're doing it to level the playing field.

This year, each group is having a non-decorated party as one of the rounds before Preference. I got a lot of flak from girls in my chapter for approving it, but it helps me in the long run. I'm also VP-Finance, and I don't want to deal with it if they go over budget.

To answer your question this is not a "rule" as in many of the other recruitment rules as stated by NPC in the green book. You university will also have recruitment rules that should be voted on each year by panhellenic on your campus. You should have a copy of those that pertain to your campus stating the way things will run. Each year changes can be made to those recruitment guidelines. I think the idea of not serving any refreshemnts is wonderful. Think about how many cups are full after each party. What a waste. If your chapter women are doing what they are supposed to they will be talking!!! not allowing the perspecitive new member time to drink. Now I know talking will make some people thirsty and it sounds like the office of greek life is going to take care of that with water bottles. Just think no more pnm dying to go to the bathroom after drinking 7 glasses of water to be polite! Now as for the VP of recruitment not going through formal recruitment it might be nice to have a new perspective. She has the materials the green book from NPC the campus guidelines. She might make some changes that should have been made a long time ago but were simply kept because "that is the way we have always done it" not necessarly the best way. Good luck in your planning.

sweetie,

That's not a no-frills rule. Unless of course, the sororities were competing with differently shaped ice cubes.

What I've seen on some websites is that, for example, if there are 10 sororities, the 3rd and 7th ones the PNMs go to are designated "ice water parties" so they can have something to drink, rather than nothing or having a drink at every party (I would be hopping around on one foot after about 4). That sounds better to me than having to glug down a water bottle between parties.

Thumbs up food at the second round of parties

We also have no frills rush, with 5 national sororities on campus. Our second night/round (out of 4 nights) we are allowed to serve simple drinks and snacks. I think we serve food only at every other party so that the girls don't have to eat at all four houses they visit.

That's our skit night so we generally serve punch and a cup of "trail mix" type stuff, if the girls want it. They can eat it during the skit.

You know, USC is supposed to try to tone down their rush and make it a little less-frills and so first round parties are only allowed to have water. But even the water is such a competition! One house had water bottles professionally designed with their letters and symbols on it, while another house got those colorful plastic ice cubes filled with water in their symbol while another house had pellegrino with their colors ribbon tied around it. It all seemed kind of silly to me. And since every house was so proud of their water, you felt you had to drink it at every house. By the times I got ot my breaks, I really had to use the restroom!

Me either Uof IL AXO! When we went to no frills - we stopped serving drinks and food every night. Now the girls have a break party where they can eat and have drinks. If they want to carry a drink around with them, they have bags with their names on them that the px's keep outside with them while the girls are in the party.
