I'm thinking of transferring schools, (before you panic, it's not because of my chapter or anything like that) but I grew up in Norman, OK, and I ended up going to OU, and I'm tired of the town and would liek a change of scenery.

BUT, I want to still be involved in greek life wherever I go, thus, I have to choose a school that has Alpha Gam on campus.

Plus, I want a chapter that is very open to different types of people (I'm Jewish, and not in any way the typical sorority sister.)

So, girls, what schools should I look at? Where do you think I'll fit in?

This may sound strange but I think that Theta Upsilon may be of interest to you. The college is affliated with the Southern Baptist but you would not be the first non-christian here and the only religious rec is that you take 2 religious classes, one on the New Testament (main it is the history, not the theology) and the second can either be on the new or the old. I am taking Old Testament Law and History next semester. I don't know what the Jewish community is like in Lexington (I didn't grow up here) but about 45 min to an hour is Louisville and it has a very large and diverse community, everything from Ortodox to Progressive temples.

As for the chapter, I am not a colligiate anymore, but I do know that we have never been overly Christian. We focus on the diversity of the members, which was very important to the charter members because it seemed that every other chapter here on campus focused on molding everyone to their ways.

If you are in the Lexington/Georgetown area and want to just stop by, let me know and I will show you around.

I've got a few questions. How far away would you like to go? What kind of a college experience are you looking for--small town, big city, tropical beaches? Are you looking for a Greek system that dominates the social life of the campus, or maybe where there are other social distractions? Also, what's your major? You should pick a school that has a good program for you.

If you decide that big city life is for you, I'd urge you to check out San Francisco State (my beloved alma mater!). The city is our campus, and you will NEVER run out of social things to do there. Delta Pi chapter is very strong and visible on campus. They are extremely diverse racially, ethnically and religiously. You won't have a problem finding your place there.

But let's not put the cart in front of the horse. First you need to figure out what kind of a college experience you're looking for...*then* look for the right campus and chapter!

Before transferring schools, you should consider the National Student Exchange program. It would be a way for you to get away from your campus (for a semester or a year), experience a new place, and then go home and finish up (or actually transfer there). Depending on the campus, you pay either your home campus tuition or the other campus' tuition.

I did this when I went to Univ. of Hawaii (talk about a different experience there!), and it was the best experience I've ever had. I only mention this because the sucky part of transferring is losing credits, but it sounds like you've got the travel itch, so maybe this might help you get thru that....

kstar- Take it from me. Being both Jewish and an Alpha Gam should NOT be a problem at ANY chapter ANY where. Boy, I have experience with that! Yes, I am both an Alpha Gam and Jewish too. In fact, I have written Suzanne Carmack Spicer about just that very thing. She responded with a really nice letter to me. Anyway, my suggestion would be a school in the northeast or in the mid-west. Or another suggestion would be a large southeastern university such as Univ. of Ala., U. of Ga., or Fla. State. I know for sure these schools have both an Alpha Gam chapter and a Hillel. Also, the towns these schools are located in have at least one synagouge. Just suggestions to try. Feel free to contact me about this.
