Film School

Okay, so there are different type of film schools. There are industry ones where you learn to sell product to Hollywood. They pay for your movie, but they own the copywright if you make it there. Then there are indepentant ones where you learn to get money and get to film but everyone gets to make their film. Are those harder to get into?? Please Help!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure what you mean re:those two types of film schools? Being an alum of a Univ based fiilm school, those are the only ones I know of. IMO, you'd want to be VERY wary of any program that would try to retain rights to YOUR creative property.

My friend just graduated in August from the Vancouver Film School in BC Canada...www.vfs.com

Havent' talked to him in a while, but he went there immediately after HS so a college degree probably wouldn't hurt. The program is just over a year long and so you get out on your way quickly.

Acording to my source I read, that AFI and USC own the directorial rights to anything produced with their equipment and could only be entered into festivals with express permission.

I am wary of schools like that.

OK Biilly, I get it now.

No need to be wary of that... the films you make in film school are not really somethiing you're going to be selling. YOU DO retain the rights to screenplays you write, or the rights revert to you upon graduatiion, i don't remember whiich it is. What your student film is is a sample, a way to make contacts, get jobs, build your reel. I think they feel, that as the film is a GROUP effort pairing student director, producer, dp, editor, etc--keeping the rights at USC avoids in-fighting amongst the crew on who's project it is. EACH of the students involved would put it on their reel. USC also has its own yeearly film festival to showcasse itis student's work for agents and studiio executives.

USC has the reputatiion it has for a reason. Its graduates do make insane contacts just by being in the program, there is no need to be wary their policies... I'd be more wary of the acceptance rate--something like 25 out of 2000, or something ridiculous liike that. I knew someone who applied SEVEN times to the producing program before he got in.
